Which Water Pump to Choose in Morocco? Booster Pump, Submersible Drainage Pump or Petrol Water Pump

Groupe de surpression Gardena 3700/4 - Brico MIM Maroc

Low pressure at the tap, a basement flooded after a storm, irrigating land from a well… In Morocco, a water pump meets very different needs. The most important thing is to choose the right type of pump for the right use. Here is the Brico MIM guide.

Which pump for which need?

Your need Type of pump
Low pressure at taps and shower, a water tank to supply Booster pump / booster set
Flooded cellar, garage or basement, draining a pond or tank Submersible drainage pump (clean or dirty water)
Irrigating land from a well or basin, with no power supply Petrol water pump
Pool filtration Pool pump (see our pool guide)

The booster pump: finally, good pressure at home

In many neighbourhoods and multi-storey houses in Morocco, mains pressure is insufficient, especially on upper floors or at peak times. A booster pump automatically increases the pressure as soon as you open a tap: a more pleasant shower, and a washing machine and gas water heater that work properly.

The submersible drainage pump: removing water fast

After heavy rain, a leak, or to empty a pond or tank, the submersible drainage pump is placed in the water and pumps it outside. There are two types:

  • Clean water: lightly soiled water, pool, tank, flooding with clean water. Gardena: 8600, 9000, 20000 basic.
  • Dirty water: muddy water with particles, flooded basement, building site. Gardena: 10500, 16000, 20000 basic, 25000.

With Gardena, the number in the model name is the maximum flow rate in litres per hour: the higher it is, the faster the pump empties.

The petrol water pump: irrigating without electricity

For farmland, orchards or gardens far from the power grid, a petrol water pump draws water from a shallow well, a basin or an irrigation channel (seguia). The outlet diameter indicates its capacity: 2″ (50 mm) petrol water pump for everyday needs, 3″ (63 mm) petrol water pump for higher flow rates.

Brico MIM tip: to irrigate while saving water, pair your pump with a drip irrigation system or properly adjusted sprinklers. See our watering guide.

Flow rate and head: the two figures to understand

  • Flow rate (L/h or m³/h): the amount of water moved. The higher it is, the faster the pump.
  • Total head (in metres): the height to which the pump can send water. The higher (upper floors, rooftop tank) or further you need to pump, the more head you need.

The stated flow rate is always the maximum: it decreases as the head increases. Choose a pump with some margin.

Frequently asked questions

Which pump for a rooftop water tank?

A booster pump or booster set able to reach the height of the roof, with a flow rate suited to your consumption.

Can a submersible drainage pump be used for watering?

It can move water from a basin, but it is not designed to give sprinklers pressure. For that, a booster set is a better choice.
