Once a lawn passes a certain size, mowing becomes a real chore: hours of walking, stops to empty the grass box, and fatigue under the sun. A ride-on mower, or lawn tractor, promises to change all that. But is it really worth it for your land? In this guide we give an honest comparison between ride-on mowers and large self-propelled mowers in terms of area, cutting, budget and maintenance, with ride-on mower prices in Morocco and the essential safety rules for a large property, whether a villa in Marrakech, an estate near Meknes or a property in the Nador and Driouch area.

From what lawn size is a ride-on mower worth it?
The lawn area (not the total plot area) is the first criterion. Manufacturers state a recommended area for each model, which is the best basis for deciding. Here is what the machines in our catalogue are rated for:
- Up to 600 m²: the Gardena PowerMax Duo 46/36V P4A battery mower (46 cm cut, 2 × 18 V 4 Ah batteries).
- 1,400 to 1,800 m²: the Efco LR 48 TK Comfort Plus self-propelled petrol mower.
- 1,600 to 2,000 m²: the self-propelled Efco LR 53 TBX Allroad Plus4, with large wheels for uneven ground.
- 2,300 to 2,600 m²: the professional Efco MR 55 HXF, with a Honda engine and aluminium deck.
- Up to 7,000 m²: the Efco 105R/16 K ride-on mower, with a 105 cm cut.
In short: below roughly 2,000 m² of lawn, a good self-propelled mower is enough in the vast majority of cases. Above 2,500 m², and especially if you mow often, a ride-on mower becomes genuinely worthwhile. In between, it depends on your time, your physical condition and the layout of the land.
Brico MIM tip: measure only the grassed area, excluding the house, pool, paths and vegetable garden. Many owners overestimate their lawn; a 3,000 m² plot may have only 1,200 m² of grass. Send us a plan or a few photos on WhatsApp and we will help you estimate.

Advantages of a ride-on mower
- Productivity: with a 105 cm cut versus 46 to 53 cm for a walk-behind mower, each pass covers roughly twice the width.
- Comfort: you stay seated; the hydrostatic transmission of the Efco 105R/16 K adjusts speed continuously (0 to 9 km/h forward, 0 to 4 km/h reverse) with no gear changes.
- Fewer stops: a 310 L grass box, versus 60 to 80 L on walk-behind mowers.
Its limits
- Price: a ride-on mower is a much bigger investment than a self-propelled mower.
- Size: the Efco 105R/16 K measures 251 × 117 × 100 cm and weighs 240 kg. You need a garage or shelter, and wide enough access to the garden.
- Finishing: it cannot reach everywhere; a grass trimmer is still needed around trees, walls and flower beds.
Cutting, collecting and mulching
On a ride-on mower, cut quality depends on the deck (width, number of blades) and the height setting. The Efco 105R/16 K has a 105 cm deck with 2 blades, a cutting height of 30 to 90 mm in 7 positions and an electromagnetic blade clutch. It offers collection in the grass box or mulching as standard: the grass is finely chopped and returned to the lawn, which feeds it and reduces evaporation, a real advantage in the Moroccan climate. Side discharge, however, is not available on this model.
In summer, keep the cutting height fairly high: longer grass copes better with heat. Our detailed advice is in the guide sowing, watering and mowing a lawn in Morocco.
Is your land suitable for a ride-on mower?
Before investing, ask yourself these questions:
- Is the land mostly flat? Steep slopes, banks and terraced land are better handled with a large-wheeled self-propelled mower, such as the LR 53 TBX Allroad, or a brush cutter.
- Are there many obstacles? Fruit trees, olive trees, ponds, flower beds: every obstacle slows a ride-on mower down. Its 75 cm turning radius helps it get around, but a very cluttered plot reduces its value.
- Is the ground even? Stones, holes and stumps damage the cutting deck. Clear and level the ground before the first mow.
- Is it lawn or wasteland? A ride-on mower is made for mowing a maintained lawn, not for clearing tall vegetation: for that, see our guide petrol or battery brush cutter.
- Do you have shelter? The machine must be stored out of the sun, rain and dust.

Ride-on mower maintenance
A ride-on mower is a petrol-engined machine that needs regular care, like any small engine. Always follow the intervals in the manufacturer's manual:
- Engine oil: check the level before each use and change it as per the manual.
- Air filter: clean it often, especially in dry and dusty regions.
- Blades: sharp, balanced blades cut cleanly and prevent the grass from yellowing. Engine off, key removed, wearing gloves.
- Cutting deck: clean out built-up grass after each mow.
- Tyres and starter battery: check pressure and charge, especially after a long period without use.
- Fuel: use clean fuel and refuel outdoors with the engine off and cool.

Safety: slopes, children, good practice
On slopes
- Never exceed the maximum slope stated in the manufacturer's manual.
- On a ride-on mower, drive up and down the slope, never across it: driving across is where the risk of overturning is greatest.
- Avoid sharp turns and speed changes on slopes, and slow down near the edges of ditches, ponds or banks.
- Do not mow wet grass on a slope: the wheels can lose grip.
Children and animals
- Keep children and animals away from the mowing area, and stop the machine if anyone approaches.
- Never carry a passenger, not even a child on your lap.
- Never let a child drive the mower.
- Always look behind you before reversing.
- Remove the key as soon as you leave the seat.
Equipment
Sturdy closed shoes, long trousers, hearing protection and glasses. Pick up stones, branches and toys before you start.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a ride-on mower cost in Morocco?
At Brico MIM, the Efco 105R/16 K ride-on mower (105 cm cut, up to 7,000 m²) is available from 59,999 DH. For comparison, our large petrol mowers range from 4,545 DH (TOTAL TGT196201) to 20,299 DH (professional Efco MR 55 HXF).
Ride-on mower or lawn tractor: what is the difference?
In everyday language, both terms describe a mower you sit on and drive. "Lawn tractor" is often used for models with a central cutting deck and a large grass box, such as the Efco 105R/16 K.
Is a ride-on mower suitable for 1,000 m²?
It is rarely necessary. For 1,000 m², a petrol push or self-propelled mower does the job very well, for a much smaller budget and footprint.
