Lawns in Morocco: How to Sow, Water and Mow a Heat-Resistant Lawn

Having a beautiful lawn in Morocco is not impossible, even with summers above 35 °C in Marrakech, Fez or Oujda. The key: choose a suitable grass, sow at the right time and, above all, manage watering and mowing well. This guide explains how to get a heat-resistant lawn, with simple summer lawn care that saves water and suits the Moroccan climate.

Which grass to choose in Morocco?

Not all grasses cope with heat in the same way. Broadly speaking, there are cool-season grasses, green almost all year round but thirsty in summer, and warm-season grasses, very heat-resistant but which slow down or turn yellow in cool winters.

Type of grass Heat Establishment Good to know
Tall fescue Good for a cool-season grass Seed Deep roots, copes with water shortage better than other cool-season grasses
Perennial ryegrass Medium Seed Fast germination and resistant to foot traffic; often used in mixes
Cynodon (“Bermuda” type) Very good Seed, turf or sprigs depending on the variety Loves full sun, very resistant to foot traffic; turns yellow in cool winters
Paspalum, kikuyu Very good Mainly turf or sprigs Very vigorous; kikuyu can invade neighbouring flower beds

For a garden in full sun inland, a warm-season grass is often the most durable. On the coast (Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Agadir) or in partial shade, a fescue-based mix may be suitable. If in doubt, ask a local nursery that knows your soil and climate.

Sowing a lawn: timing and steps

When to sow grass in Morocco?

  • Cool-season grasses (fescue, ryegrass): preferably in autumn, when the heat eases, or at the very start of spring.
  • Warm-season grasses: in spring, once the soil has warmed up well.
  • Avoid sowing in midsummer: young shoots dry out before they have developed their roots.

Sowing steps

  1. Prepare the soil: dig or rake, remove stones, roots and weeds.
  2. Level with a rake to avoid hollows where water collects.
  3. Sow evenly, ideally in two crossed passes, following the rate indicated on the bag. An L spreader on wheels (12.5 L, 45 cm width, up to 400 m²) helps sow or fertilise evenly.
  4. Cover lightly with a rake, then firm down (roller or board).
  5. Keep the soil moist until germination, with light, frequent watering in a fine spray, without forming puddles.

Wait until the grass reaches a sufficient height before the first mow, set to the highest position.

Watering the lawn without waste

Watering is the most important, and most costly, part of keeping a lawn in Morocco. A few simple rules can save a lot of water:

  • Water early in the morning or in the evening, never in the heat of the day: much of the water evaporates before reaching the roots.
  • Water deeply but less often (once the lawn is established): this encourages the roots to grow deeper and makes the grass more resilient.
  • Watch the lawn: grass that keeps footprints or takes on a grey-blue tinge is thirsty.
  • Respect local watering restrictions, which may apply in some cities during droughts.

Which sprinkler for which lawn?

Lawn Recommended sprinkler Area covered Price
Small round or square lawn Foxtrott Classic rotating sprinkler 9 to 130 m², 360° 129 DH
Lawn corner or edge Vario Comfort circular sprinkler on spike Up to 225 m², 90° to 360° sector 269 DH
Medium rectangular lawn Aqua M oscillating sprinkler 110 to 250 m² 329 DH
Large rectangular lawn AquaZoom L oscillating sprinkler Up to 350 m², adjustable length and width 549 DH

To never forget to water, or water at midday, add an Easy Plus water timer between the tap and the hose: you set the duration and frequency, and it takes care of the rest. More choice in the watering collection and in our guide hoses, sprinklers and automatic watering.

Brico MIM tip: to find out how much water your sprinkler delivers, place a few small identical containers on the lawn during watering, then compare the levels. This shows you the areas that get too much or too little water so you can adjust the sprinkler's position or setting.

Mowing a lawn in summer

Mowing too short is the main cause of scorched lawns in summer. Taller grass shades the soil, retains moisture and limits weeds.

  • Raise the cutting height during heatwaves.
  • Never cut more than a third of the grass height in a single mow.
  • Mow in the evening or early morning, on dry grass, never in the heat of the day or on a lawn already stressed by drought.
  • Keep the blade sharp: a blunt blade tears the grass, and the tips turn yellow.
  • Sometimes leave fine clippings in place (mulching): they protect the soil and return nutrients to it.

Which mower for your area?

For a small lawn up to 150 m², the Classic 330 cylinder mower cuts cleanly and quietly, without a motor. Up to 300 m², the PowerMax 1100/32 electric mower (8.3 kg) simply plugs in and starts. For a garden of 800 to 1,000 m², the Efco LR 44 PK Comfort petrol mower (123 cm³ engine, steel deck) offers the autonomy you need. For finishing, a SmallCut 300/23 grass trimmer (1.6 kg) or long-handled grass shears save you bending down. Summer lawn care: good habits

  • Limit foot traffic during heatwaves: stressed grass struggles to recover.
  • Avoid fertilising in the heat: choose spring and autumn instead, following the rate indicated on the packaging.
  • Pull weeds by hand before they go to seed.
  • Reduce the lawn area if water is scarce: keep grass where it is useful (play, relaxation) and replace difficult areas with mulch or low-water plants. See our tips to save water in the garden.
  • A cool-season lawn that turns yellow in summer is not always dead: it may go dormant and green up again when temperatures drop, if its roots have not suffered too much.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best grass for heat in Morocco?

Warm-season grasses (cynodon, paspalum, kikuyu) cope best with heat and full sun. For a lawn that also stays green in winter, a tall fescue-based mix is a good compromise, especially on the coast or in partial shade.

How often should I water a lawn in summer?

It depends on the soil, exposure and type of grass. Deep, spaced-out watering early in the morning or in the evening is better than small daily waterings. Watch the lawn and adjust.

What height should I mow the lawn in summer?

Higher than in spring: raise your mower's cutting height and never remove more than a third of the grass length at a time.
