The mower does the bulk of the work, but it is the edges that give a lawn its well-kept look: along walls, around trees, at the foot of flower beds, benches and paths. That is the job of the grass trimmer, often called a string trimmer or line trimmer. In this guide we help you choose the right grass trimmer in Morocco (corded electric or Gardena battery trimmer), explain the settings that make all the difference and share the technique for truly neat edges, whether your garden is in Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier or Driouch.

Grass trimmer, brush cutter, shears: what is the difference?
These three tools are often confused, yet they meet different needs:
- The grass trimmer (string trimmer): lightweight, it cuts grass where the mower cannot reach, using a line (or plastic blades) spinning at high speed. It is the finishing tool for lawns.
- The brush cutter: more powerful, often petrol-driven, it tackles tall grass, brambles and overgrown land. We have a full guide on it: petrol or battery brush cutter.
- Grass shears: manual, for small precise touch-ups around an edge or a pot. The Gardena Classic swivel shears (from 219 DH) or the Comfort long-handled shears (from 459 DH), which let you work standing up, are ideal for small areas.
For a house or villa lawn, the winning pair is a good mower plus a grass trimmer. If you have not chosen your mower yet, read our guide lawn mowers in Morocco: how to choose.
Corded or battery grass trimmer?
The corded electric trimmer
It runs on mains power: no battery to watch, constant power and a lower price. It is the right choice if your edges are close to an outdoor socket. You just need to manage the extension lead, always keeping it behind you and away from the cutting line.
The battery trimmer
With no cable, you can go round the garden, fruit trees and flower beds without worrying about an extension lead. Gardena 18V P4A models use batteries compatible with the other tools of the Power for All range, so you can share batteries between your trimmer, hedge trimmer or blower. The point to watch is runtime, stated by the manufacturer for each model.
Brico MIM tip: for a small garden close to the house, a light corded model is enough. As soon as the edges are long or far from sockets (large garden, orchard, villa), cordless saves a lot of time and effort.
The criteria that matter
Cutting width
It ranges from 23 cm on compact models to 30 cm on the most powerful ones. A wider cut covers more ground with each pass; a narrower one is more precise and lighter.
Cutting system: line or blades
Most trimmers use a nylon line (1.6 mm on light models, 2 mm on the Gardena PowerTrim 30/18V for dense grass). The line is fed either by tapping the head on the ground (Tap 'n Go) or automatically, as on the SmallCut 25/18V. The ComfortCut 23/18V uses replacement blades stored in the handle instead.
Edging function
This is the detail that makes the difference: the head swivels to cut vertically and draw a clean line between the lawn and the path or flower bed. The ComfortCut 550/28 has a head that tilts to 0°, 10° or 60°, the PowerCut 650/28 a swivelling head, and the SmallCut 25/18V a guide wheel for straight lines.
Ergonomics and plant protection
A telescopic, tilting shaft lets you reach under benches and shrubs without bending. A plant protection guard prevents damage to flowers and the bark of young trees: a real plus along flower beds.

Our recommendations
- Small garden, small budget: the very light SmallCut 300/23, or the TOTAL TG103512 350 W with telescopic shaft (250 mm cut, from 540 DH).
- Medium garden with flower beds: the ComfortCut 550/28 for its edging function and plant guard, or the SmallCut 25/18V if you want cordless.
- Large lawn, dense grass: the corded PowerCut 650/28, or the battery PowerTrim 30/18V.
- Already on TOTAL 20 V: the TGTLI20301 (listed contents: the tool; ask us for the compatible battery) or the TOSLI23024 trimmer + blower pack with 2 batteries and charger, from 1,040 DH.
Technique for neat edges
- Mow first, finish afterwards: the mower sets the reference height, the trimmer matches it.
- Tilt the head slightly and walk at a steady pace, cutting only with the tip of the line: that is where cutting is most effective.
- For edging, turn the head vertical and follow the edge of the path or bed like a guide line.
- Around trees, keep your distance: a line whipping the bark of young trees and olive trees can damage them. Use the plant guard.
- Cut dry grass rather than wet, and avoid the hottest hours in summer: for you and the lawn, early morning or late afternoon is better.
- Rake or blow the clippings off the paths for a clean finish.
For a healthy lawn despite the heat, see also our guide sowing, watering and mowing a lawn in Morocco.
Maintenance and safety
- Wear safety glasses, closed shoes and long trousers: the line throws stones and debris.
- Clear the area before you start (stones, cables, toys) and keep children and pets away.
- Unplug the tool or remove the battery before changing the line, spool or blades.
- Clean the head and guard after use to remove built-up grass.
- Store batteries in a dry place, away from heat and sun.
- Corded models: use an outdoor extension lead in good condition and a socket protected by an RCD.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a grass trimmer cost in Morocco?
At Brico MIM, grass trimmers start from 540 DH (TOTAL TG103512 electric) and 649 DH (Gardena SmallCut 300/23). Gardena battery models range from 1,399 DH to 2,699 DH, as kits with battery and charger.
What is the difference between a string trimmer and a grass trimmer?
It is the same tool: "string trimmer" refers to the spinning nylon line that cuts the grass. Some grass trimmers use plastic blades instead of a line.
Can a grass trimmer replace a lawn mower?
No, except for very small areas. It is designed for finishing; for the lawn itself, a mower gives an even cut and is much faster.
