Low water pressure at home: causes and solutions (booster pump, water tank, filters)

Groupe de surpression Gardena 3700/4 pour régler une pression d'eau faible à la maison

A shower that barely trickles, an upstairs tap almost dry, a gas water heater that won't light… Low water pressure is one of the most common plumbing problems in houses and apartments in Morocco. The first instinct is often to buy a booster pump straight away, but that is not always the right answer: a scaled-up aerator or a partly closed valve can produce exactly the same symptoms. This guide first helps you find the cause, then choose the right solution: cleaning, filters, water tank or a home booster pump, with prices for the models available at Brico MIM.

Low water pressure: identify the symptom

Before taking anything apart, observe the problem carefully. The key question is: where and when is the pressure low?

  • A single tap or shower: the problem is almost always local (aerator, shower head, hose, shut-off valve).
  • The whole house, cold and hot water: the cause is upstream (water supply, main valve, mains network, water tank).
  • Hot water only: look at the water heater (scaled-up safety valve unit or appliance, gas water heater lacking flow).
  • Upstairs only: this is often a matter of height. A 10-metre column of water corresponds to about 1 bar, so each floor "uses up" part of the available pressure.
  • Only at certain times: the network is often under more demand in the morning and evening, or your water tank empties faster than it fills.

Diagnosis in 6 steps

  1. Test several outlets: kitchen, bathroom, outdoor tap, ground floor and upstairs, cold water then hot water. Note where it is weak.
  2. Check the valves: the main valve (after the meter) and the small shut-off valves under the basins must be fully open. After building work, this is a very common cause.
  3. Clean the aerator and shower head: unscrew the small tip of the tap and the shower head, rinse the screens and soak them in white vinegar to dissolve the limescale.
  4. Do the bucket test: time how long it takes to fill a 10-litre bucket at the shower. 10 litres in 60 seconds = 10 L/min. As a rough guide, a comfortable shower often needs around 8 to 12 L/min. Keep this figure: it will help you compare before and after any work.
  5. Look for a leak: close all taps and watch the meter. If it keeps turning, there is a leak somewhere, which also lowers the pressure.
  6. Ask the neighbours: if they have the same problem, the cause probably lies in the network; contact your water supplier. If they don't, the problem is in your home.

To measure the pressure itself, a plumber can screw a pressure gauge onto an outdoor tap: this is the most reliable measurement before choosing a pump.

Common causes of low water pressure and solutions

Symptom Likely cause Solution
A single weak tap Scaled-up aerator or shower head, kinked hose, shut-off valve not fully open Descale, replace the hose, open the shut-off valve
Whole house, neighbours too Low network pressure, peak hours Check with the water supplier; water tank + booster set
Whole house, neighbours normal Main valve partly closed, leak, old scaled-up or undersized pipework Check the valves, look for the leak, have a plumber inspect it
Weak only upstairs Height to compensate, roof tank not raised high enough Booster pump on the affected circuit
Weak only on hot water Scaled-up safety valve unit or water heater, gas water heater lacking flow Water heater maintenance; booster pump if incoming flow is too low
Pressure that fluctuates or stops Empty water tank, stuck float valve, clogged filter Check the tank and float valve, clean or replace the filters

Houses with a water tank: a common case in Morocco

Many Moroccan homes have a water tank to cope with supply cuts or irregular network pressure. Its position changes everything:

  • Roof tank: water flows down by gravity. The pressure depends solely on the height difference between the tank and the tap. On the top floor, just below the tank, it can be very low: a booster pump on the tank outlet usually solves the problem.
  • Ground-level or underground tank: you need a pump able to draw the water up and then send it out under pressure. That is the job of a self-priming booster set, such as the Gardena 3700/4, which draws water from up to 7 metres below the pump according to the manufacturer.

A few good practices: clean the tank regularly (deposits end up in the filters and aerators), check that the float valve closes properly, and protect the pump against dry running if the tank can empty (check the model's protections, or have your plumber add a level control).

Filters, aerators and limescale: the forgotten causes

Limescale and deposits are responsible for many gradual drops in pressure:

  • Aerators and shower heads: descale every few months in areas with hard water. Large rain shower heads, such as the one on the Blautherm 300 mm shower column (fitted with anti-limescale nozzles), are more pleasant with decent pressure. To choose your equipment well, read shower columns and taps: how to choose.
  • Sediment filter: very useful at the outlet of a tank or well to protect the pump and appliances, but a clogged filter becomes a blockage itself. Clean or replace the cartridge regularly.
  • Pump's built-in filter: some sets, such as the Gardena 3900 Silent 1, include a filter. Remember to clean it according to the instructions.

Brico MIM tip: before buying a pump, clean aerators and shower heads, check the valves and do the bucket test. If the pressure stays low, send us on WhatsApp your water source (mains, roof tank, ground tank, well), the number of floors, the number of outlets and the test result: we will point you to the right booster pump.

Booster pump: when to install one and which to choose?

A booster pump is justified when the cause is insufficient incoming pressure (upper floor, water tank, weak network) and not a blocked component. Two families are available at Brico MIM:

Model Stated specifications Suitable for Price
DINGQI LA03404 booster pump 100 W, automatic (starts when the tap is opened), compact Boosting an existing water supply: shower, upstairs, water heater. Does not pump from a well or tank 820 DH
Gardena 3700/4 booster set 800 W, 3700 l/h, 4.1 bar max, 19 L tank, self-priming up to 7 m, thermal protection, pressure gauge and non-return valve Supplying the house and garden from a water tank, cistern or well 2599 DH
Gardena 3900 Silent 1 booster set 650 W, 3900 l/h, 4.3 bar max, 48 dB(A) at 5 m, 21 L tank, built-in filter, 5-year warranty after online registration Same use, when the pump has to be installed near living areas 3899 DH

Why a tank?

On Gardena sets, the pressure tank holds a reserve of water that is already pressurised: the motor doesn't restart for every small draw (a glass of water, washing hands). This is more comfortable and limits motor starts.

Installation and safety

  • Have the pump fitted by a plumber, with the water pressure off and the power disconnected.
  • Connect it to an outlet or circuit protected by a 30 mA RCD, in a dry, ventilated place.
  • If you are connected directly to the public network, check with your water supplier about the rules for connecting a pump; the most common solution remains a water tank + booster set.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the water pressure low only upstairs?

Because the water has to rise: about 1 bar is "used up" for every 10 metres of height. With a roof tank, the floor just below has very little height, and therefore very little pressure. A booster pump on that circuit is the usual solution.

How much does a home booster pump cost in Morocco?

At Brico MIM, the DINGQI 100 W automatic booster pump costs 820 DH. The Gardena booster sets with tank cost 2599 DH (3700/4) and 3899 DH (3900 Silent 1).

Can a booster pump draw water from a tank?

Not the small DINGQI booster: it boosts an existing water supply. To draw from a ground-level tank, cistern or well, you need a self-priming booster set such as the Gardena 3700/4.

Why won't my gas water heater light when the pressure is low?

An instantaneous gas water heater lights when it detects sufficient water flow. If the flow is too low, it won't ignite or it switches off. Clean the aerator and shower head first; if the incoming flow is still insufficient, a booster pump can help.
