A heavy storm, a burst pipe, rising groundwater: within a few hours, a basement, garage or cellar can end up under water. To drain it quickly and limit the damage, the essential tool is a sump pump (submersible drainage pump). But which one should you choose, a clear-water pump or a dirty-water pump? And how do you use it without electrical risk? Here is our practical guide to the sump pump in Morocco when your house floods.

First reflexes in a flood: electrical safety
Water and electricity are a deadly combination. Before you even think about the pump:
- Do not enter a flooded room if the water could reach sockets, plugged-in appliances or an electrical panel.
- Switch off the power at the main breaker, provided the panel is dry and can be reached without walking through water. Otherwise, call an electrician or the relevant services.
- Turn off the gas if the water has reached a water heater, a boiler or a gas bottle.
- Protect yourself: boots and gloves, as flood water can be contaminated (sewage, products stored in the garage).
To then run the pump:
- Plug it into a socket that is dry and out of reach of the water, on a circuit protected by a 30 mA residual current device (RCD). See our article circuit breakers and RCDs.
- If an extension lead is essential, use an outdoor-rated cable and keep the connection raised and dry, never lying in water.
- Always unplug the pump before lifting it out of the water, moving it or cleaning the intake. Never carry it by its cable; use the handle.
- Never put your hands in the water while the pump is plugged in.
Brico MIM tip: the Gardena sump pumps in our catalogue come with a pre-fitted cable and, on several models, a 10 m cable. This usually lets you reach a dry socket upstairs or on the ground floor without an extension lead. Buy your pump before the storm season: on the day of the flood, every hour counts.
Clear or dirty water: which sump pump to choose?
This is THE question. A clear-water pump that sucks up mud or gravel can clog or get damaged.
| Criterion | Clear-water pump | Dirty-water pump |
|---|---|---|
| Type of water | Clean or slightly cloudy water: water leak, pool, tank | Muddy water, sand, grit, leaves: storm, run-off, pit |
| Particles accepted (Gardena) | Up to 5 mm (8600, 9000) | From 25 mm to 38 mm depending on the model |
| Strength | Pumps very low: down to 1 to 2 mm of residual water on some models | Does not get blocked by debris |
| Ideal for | Finishing off a floor, clean water damage | Basement or garage flooded after rain, sump pit, building site |
In short: after a storm, the water that gets into a garage or basement is almost always loaded with soil and sand. If in doubt, choose a dirty-water pump. A clear-water pump makes a good addition for finishing, once most of the water is out and it has settled.
Available Gardena sump pumps and their prices
All these submersible pumps have a float switch that starts and stops them according to the water level. Maximum flow rates as stated by Gardena, measured without back pressure:
| Model | Water | Power / max flow | Particles / delivery head | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gardena 8600 | Clear | 400 W / 8,600 l/h | 5 mm / 5.5 m | from 695 DH |
| Gardena 9000 | Clear | 300 W / 9,000 l/h | 5 mm / 6 m, 2 mm residual | from 949 DH |
| Gardena 20000 basic (clear) | Clear | 550 W / 20,000 l/h | 9 m, 1 mm residual | from 789 DH |
| Gardena 10500 | Dirty | 400 W / 10,500 l/h | 25 mm / 5 m | from 719 DH |
| Gardena 20000 basic (dirty) | Dirty | 550 W / 20,000 l/h | 35 mm / 9 m | from 859 DH |
| Gardena 16000 | Dirty | 450 W / 16,000 l/h | 35 mm / 7 m | from 1,399 DH |
| Gardena 25000 | Dirty | 1,100 W / 25,000 l/h | 38 mm / 11 m | from 1,999 DH |
Our recommendations by situation
- Garage or basement flooded after a storm, small budget: the Gardena 10500 accepts particles up to 25 mm and has built-in thermal protection that cuts the motor if it overheats.
- Best flow-to-price ratio for dirty water: the Gardena 20000 basic dirty water, 20,000 l/h, particles up to 35 mm, 10 m cable and two connectors supplied (25 and 38 mm).
- Large volumes, deep sump pit, very dirty water: the Gardena 25000, the biggest in the series (38 mm, 11 m head).
- Finishing at floor level: the Gardena 20000 basic clear water leaves about 1 mm of water according to Gardena, and the Gardena 9000 about 2 mm.

What flow rate for what volume of water?
First work out the volume to remove: floor area × water depth. Example: a 20 m² garage with 10 cm of water holds 20 × 0.10 = 2 m³, i.e. 2,000 litres. With a 10,500 l/h pump, it would take a little over 10 minutes in theory.
In practice, allow much longer: the stated maximum flow is measured without back pressure, and it drops as soon as the water has to rise (basement stairs, outlet at street level) or travel through a long hose. That is why the delivery head matters: the deeper your basement, the more margin you need. For a basement several metres below the discharge point, go for a 9 m or 11 m model.
Using a sump pump step by step
- Make it safe: power off in the flooded area, a dry socket with an RCD for the pump.
- Connect the discharge hose to the outlet, with a suitable diameter and no kinks. A hose that is too narrow greatly reduces the flow.
- Direct the discharge to a suitable drainage point, away from the foundations and downhill, so the water does not come back into the house.
- Place the pump at the lowest point, flat and on stable ground. In very muddy water, a slab or plate under the pump stops it sinking into the silt.
- Set the float: it must move freely without touching a wall. On the Gardena 9000 it can also be locked vertically for continuous running, to be used under supervision.
- Plug in and monitor. If the flow drops, unplug, lift the pump out by the handle and clear the intake.
- Finish with a squeegee and ventilate well to dry the walls and floor.
No electricity on site? A 2" petrol motor pump (from 1,139 DH) can take over for large volumes, provided it is set up outdoors only: a combustion engine in a closed basement or garage gives off carbon monoxide. See also our article motor pumps and generators: power and maintenance.
After the flood, and how to prepare
- Have the electrical installation checked by a professional before powering up circuits or appliances that got wet.
- Rinse the pump after dirty water by running it for a few minutes in clean water, then store it somewhere dry.
- Keep a pump ready before the rainy season, with its hose, especially if your basement or garage is below street level.
- Maintain drainage: clear grates, gutters and drains limit water ingress.
- For repeated flooding, a sump pit fitted with a float-switch pump drains water automatically as soon as it rises.
Frequently asked questions
Which pump for a basement flooded with mud?
A dirty-water sump pump. At Brico MIM, the Gardena 10500, 16000, 20000 basic dirty water and 25000 models accept particles from 25 to 38 mm depending on the reference.
Can a sump pump run dry?
This should be avoided. The float switch is there precisely to stop the pump when the level drops. Check that it moves freely and supervise the pump in continuous mode.
Can a sump pump be plugged into an extension lead?
Only if essential, with an outdoor-rated cable, a raised and dry connection, and a circuit protected by a 30 mA RCD. Models with a 10 m cable often avoid the need for an extension.
What does a sump pump cost in Morocco?
At Brico MIM, Gardena sump pumps start at 695 DH (8600 clear water) and 719 DH (10500 dirty water), up to 1,999 DH for the 25000.
