A smart lock makes life easier: no more searching for keys, codes for the whole family, opening from your phone. But what should you do the day your smart lock battery is dead, you have forgotten your code or your digital lock is blocked? Don't panic: with a few good habits and regular smart lock maintenance, these situations stay rare and easy to handle. Here is the Brico MIM troubleshooting guide, with only simple and safe advice.

Low batteries: act before the breakdown
Depending on the model, a smart lock runs on batteries or on a rechargeable battery. Most models warn you when power is getting low (beep, indicator light or app notification): never ignore this reminder, it is what keeps you from being locked out.
Good habits
- Replace or recharge at the first alert, without waiting for the lock to stop working.
- Use the type of batteries recommended by the manufacturer and change them all at once, without mixing new and used batteries.
- Write down the date of the last change (in your phone, for example) to anticipate the next one.
- Keep new batteries at home or, for a rechargeable model, recharge the battery at regular intervals.
A concrete example: the X5 Pro Wi-Fi smart lock runs on 4 AAA alkaline batteries, with a stated battery life of 12 to 18 months depending on use. The Ferri SWC2 lock with camera uses a 4200 mAh rechargeable lithium battery. Very frequent opening, a camera or Wi-Fi use more power.
Dead battery and door closed: emergency solutions
If the lock no longer lights up and you are outside, there are usually two solutions, depending on your model's equipment:
- The mechanical emergency key: many smart locks keep a key cylinder. This is the simplest solution — as long as the key has not been left inside!
- Emergency power via USB port: some models have an external port that lets you power the lock temporarily with a power bank and a suitable cable, just long enough to enter your code or fingerprint. Once inside, replace the batteries or recharge the battery.
Here is what the product sheets of the locks we sell indicate:
| Model | Power and backup shown on the product sheet | Price |
|---|---|---|
| X5 Pro Wi-Fi (Tuya) | 4 AAA batteries (12 to 18 months), charging cable included, 2 mechanical emergency keys | From 1,690 DH |
| NGTeco digital lock | USB Type-C emergency power port | From 1,390 DH |
| Ferri SWC2 with camera | 4200 mAh rechargeable lithium battery, emergency key | From 3,400 DH |
| Other models (M1 PRO, K5 CAM, I40, K10, I30) | Check the supplied manual or ask us on WhatsApp | From 2,390 DH |
Brico MIM tip: as soon as the lock is installed, find its emergency solution (key, USB port) and test it once with the door open. Keep the emergency key outside the house in a safe place (with a trusted relative, at the office), but never hidden near the door.
Forgotten code, fingerprint refused, lost card
You have forgotten your code
Use another registered opening method: fingerprint, RFID card, app or key. Once inside, the administrator can create a new code from the keypad or the app. That is why it is so useful to have at least two opening methods set up for each person.
Too many attempts: the lock blocks temporarily
For security reasons, many digital locks block the keypad for a while after several wrong codes. This is not a fault: wait, then try again calmly or use another opening method. The duration and number of attempts depend on the model (see the manual).
The fingerprint is no longer recognised
- Wipe the sensor and your finger (a wet, dusty, cut or very dry finger makes reading difficult).
- Place your finger flat, in the centre of the sensor, as during registration.
- Register two different fingers per person, and re-register a fingerprint that often causes problems.
Lost RFID card or phone
Immediately delete the card or access concerned from the app or the administrator menu, then assign a new card. Do the same after a worker, a housekeeper or a tenant leaves: that is the advantage of a smart lock, no need to change the cylinder. For short-term rentals, see also our guide smart lock for Airbnb.
Forgotten administrator code
This is the trickiest case: the reset procedure varies by model and is normally done from the inside. Do not take the lock apart at random: contact Brico MIM after-sales service, who will guide you according to your model.
Quick troubleshooting table
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Screen or keypad off | Batteries dead | Emergency key or USB port, then new batteries / recharge |
| Repeated beeps when opening | Low battery alert (most often) | Replace or recharge quickly |
| Keypad blocked for a while | Too many wrong codes | Wait, try again, or use another method |
| Fingerprint refused | Dirty sensor, damp or damaged finger | Clean, use another finger, re-register |
| Remote opening impossible | Wi-Fi down or too weak | Check the router, move it closer or boost the Wi-Fi |
| Bolt straining, batteries draining fast | Misaligned door, rubbing strike plate | Have the door adjusted by a professional |
App or Wi-Fi not responding
Rest assured: if the Internet goes down, local opening methods (code, fingerprint, card, key) usually keep working. Only remote functions (opening from the app, notifications, codes sent remotely) need the connection. If the app is not responding:
- check that your Internet router is working and that your phone is connected;
- check the battery level: a lock running out of power may lose its connection;
- if the door is far from the router, the Wi-Fi signal may be too weak: our article weak Wi-Fi at home offers solutions;
- after changing your router or Wi-Fi password, reconnect the lock to the app according to the manual.
Smart lock maintenance: the checklist
- Cleaning: a soft, dry (or barely damp) cloth on the keypad, screen and fingerprint sensor. No abrasive products, solvents or water jets.
- Door alignment: a rubbing door or a poorly adjusted strike plate forces the motor to strain and drains the batteries faster.
- Test the emergency key from time to time, with the door open, to make sure it turns smoothly.
- Review access: regularly delete codes, cards and fingerprints that are no longer used.
- Updates: if the app offers an update, run it with well-charged batteries.
- Protection: if the door is directly exposed to rain or sun, ask for advice before installation.
Many problems come from approximate installation (badly adjusted door, wrong thickness). Before buying, read our guide installing a smart lock: compatibility and fitting and our smart lock buying guide for Morocco.
When should you call a professional?
Never force a lock and do not take it apart yourself. Call a technician if:
- the motor runs but the bolt does not retract or extend;
- the lock stays blocked despite new batteries;
- the emergency key no longer turns;
- the door has sagged or rubs.
Good to know: in our smart locks collection, you can choose the “With installation” option at the same price; our team will call you to set the day that suits you.
Frequently asked questions
If the battery is dead, does the door stay locked?
Yes, the door stays locked: a dead battery does not open it. You open it with the emergency key or the USB emergency power if your model has one.
Does my lock work without the Internet?
Generally yes for the code, fingerprint, card and key. Remote functions through the app require a Wi-Fi connection.
How often should the batteries be changed?
It depends on the model and on use. For example, the X5 Pro states 12 to 18 months with 4 AAA batteries. Change them as soon as the low battery alert appears.
