You've chosen your smart lock and now you want to fit it on your front door? Before you get the drill out, a few checks will avoid most unpleasant surprises: compatibility with the door, thickness, type of existing lock, opening direction and Wi-Fi coverage. This guide explains how to install a smart lock step by step, and which mistakes to avoid, whether you fit it yourself or leave it to a technician.

Is your door compatible with a smart lock?
The vast majority of smart locks sold for homes are mortise locks: a case (the lock body) is recessed into the edge of the door, and two panels are fixed on either side, the outer panel with the fingerprint reader and keypad, and the inner panel with the batteries. For a smooth installation, check these points first:
- The door material: solid wood, MDF, metal doors or security doors are well suited. A glass door, a very thin door or a narrow-profile aluminium door is often a problem, because there isn't room for the lock body.
- The current lock: a standard mortise lock is easy to replace. A multipoint lock (several bolts at the top and bottom of the door, common on security doors) requires checking that the new lock body fits, or keeping the existing espagnolette.
- The opening direction: door opening to the left or right, inwards or outwards. Most handles are reversible, but the adjustment is made during fitting.
- Wi-Fi at the door: for a Wi-Fi lock controlled remotely, the signal must reach the entrance. Test with your phone, in front of the door, with the door closed.
Measurements to take before buying
Grab a tape measure and note these measurements. They let you confirm compatibility before ordering, for example by sending us a photo on WhatsApp.
| Measurement | How to take it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Door thickness | On the edge, at handle height | The through-bolts and the handle spindle have a limited length. Many models target around 40 to 100 mm (indicative, check for each model) |
| Stile width | From the edge of the door to the glazing or moulding | The lock panel must sit flat on the door |
| Cylinder position | Distance between the edge and the centre of the cylinder, and between handle and cylinder | Determines whether the existing lock body can be reused |
| Faceplate | Height and width of the metal plate on the edge | A different faceplate means reworking the recess |
Panel dimensions vary from one model to another. For example, the X5 Pro Wi-Fi smart lock measures 305 × 69 × 13.5 mm according to its product page: check that your door stile offers this width flat.
Installing a smart lock: the steps
The manufacturer's instructions remain the reference, but the logic is almost always the same:
- Remove the old lock: handles, cylinder, then lock body. Keep the screws, they may come in handy.
- Position the supplied template: it shows the holes to drill or enlarge (for the cable and through-bolts).
- Adapt the recess if the new lock body is larger. Work neatly, without weakening the door.
- Fit the lock body, then the outer panel, passing the ribbon cable through the hole provided.
- Connect the ribbon cable to the inner panel, without pinching it, then tighten the through-bolts gradually.
- Adjust the strike plate on the frame: the bolt must go in without rubbing.
- Insert the batteries and test opening and closing with the door open, several times.
- Set it up: create the administrator, add fingerprints, codes and cards, then connect the app (Tuya Smart / Smart Life for Tuya models).
Mistakes to avoid
- Testing with the door closed right away: if a setting is wrong, you could get locked out. Always test with the door open first.
- Pinching or bending the ribbon cable between the panel and the door: this is the number one cause of a lock that stops responding.
- Overtightening the through-bolts: the handle becomes stiff and the mechanism strains.
- Leaving the backup keys inside: keep a mechanical key in a safe place outside the house (car, family).
- Forgetting the administrator: until an administrator is created, some locks open with any fingerprint.
- Neglecting the batteries: the X5 Pro, for example, runs on 4 AAA batteries for 12 to 18 months of battery life according to its product page. Replace them as soon as the low-battery alert appears.
Brico MIM tip: before ordering, send us a photo of your door on WhatsApp (front view and edge view) along with its thickness. We'll confirm the right model for you and you'll avoid a return.
With or without installation?
If you're comfortable with a drill and your door already has a standard mortise lock, fitting takes one to two hours (indicative). For a security door, a multipoint lock or a recess that needs reworking, a professional is the better option.
At Brico MIM, most models in the smart locks collection offer the choice "With installation" or "Without installation", at the same price. After you order, our team calls you to set a day that suits you. This is the case, for example, with the NGTeco digital lock, the K5 CAM digital lock with camera or the SWC2 digital lock with camera. Locks are available from 1 390 DH; up-to-date prices are on the product pages.
Frequently asked questions about installing a smart lock
Do you need to change the door to install a smart lock?
No, in most cases. A wooden, MDF or metal door with a mortise lock can take a smart lock. Only very thin, glass or narrow-profile doors are a real problem.
What happens in the event of a power or Wi-Fi outage?
The lock runs on batteries: it keeps opening with fingerprint, code or card. Without Wi-Fi, only the remote functions (app, notifications) are unavailable.
How much does installation cost?
On models that offer the option, the "With installation" version costs the same as the "Without installation" version. Check the option on the page of the product you've chosen.
Do you deliver everywhere in Morocco?
