A farmyard plunged into darkness, a villa entrance far from the electricity meter, a parking area with no power cable… The solar light (or solar street light) has become the simplest way to light outdoor spaces in Morocco: no trenching, no electricity bill, and generous sunshine almost all year round. You still need to choose the right wattage (100W, 300W or 400W) and install it properly so that it really lights up all night long.
In this guide, we explain how a solar light works, how to read the advertised wattage, which model to choose for your space and the rules for a successful installation.

How does a solar light work?
A solar light combines three components: a photovoltaic panel that captures sunlight, a battery that stores the energy during the day, and an LED head that switches on in the evening. On most models, a dusk sensor automatically turns the light on at nightfall and off at daybreak.
The big advantage: no connection to the electricity grid. There is no cable to bury, no electrician to call for wiring and nothing added to your bill. It is ideal for:
- courtyards and entrances of houses and villas;
- farms, sheds and agricultural land far from the meter;
- parking areas of shops, cafés or residences;
- paths, cul-de-sacs and small neighbourhood streets.
Which solar light wattage should you choose in Morocco?
On a solar light, the displayed wattage (100W, 300W, 400W…) is a wattage advertised by the manufacturer. It is mainly useful for comparing models with each other: a 400W is larger and brighter than a 100W from the same range. However, the actual brightness and run time also depend on the size of the panel, the battery capacity and the amount of sunshine. So compare models from the same range, and feel free to ask us for advice before buying.
Here are some indicative guidelines for choosing according to the space to be lit:
| Advertised wattage | Recommended use (indicative) | Mounting height (indicative) |
|---|---|---|
| 100W | House entrance, small courtyard, path, gate | 3 to 4 m |
| 300W | Villa or farm courtyard, small parking area, cul-de-sac | 4 to 6 m |
| 400W | Large courtyard, parking area, farm entrance, neighbourhood street | 5 to 7 m |
At Brico MIM, you will find for example the 100W 6400K NET solar LED light for an entrance, the 300W 6500K FERRI solar light or the 300W NET for a courtyard, and the 400W NET or the 400W 6000K EUROPHI for large spaces. Solar lights are available from 650 DH; up-to-date prices are shown on each product page.
One light or several?
For a large area, several well-spaced medium-wattage lights often provide better lighting than a single very powerful one: the light is more even and there are fewer shadowy areas. As a rough guide, allow a spacing between two poles of about 3 to 4 times the mounting height.
Other criteria to check
- Light colour: 6000K to 6500K models give a cool white light, close to daylight, which is very effective for the security of an entrance or a parking area.
- Sunshine at the location: a light placed in the shade of a tree or a wall recharges poorly and will switch off earlier in the night.
- The mounting: pole, wall or wall bracket. Check that the mounting is strong enough for the weight and wind load of the light.
- Operating mode: automatic switch-on at dusk, motion sensor or remote control depending on the model. Check the product page or ask us.
Installing your solar street light properly
Installing a solar light is simple, because there is no electrical wiring. However, a few rules make all the difference:
- Choose the location: full sun for several hours a day, with no shade from trees, walls or buildings, including in winter when the sun is lower.
- Orient the panel: in Morocco, turn the panel towards the south, with a tilt of around 30° (indicative), to capture as much sun as possible.
- Keep away from other lights: another light source that is too close can fool the dusk sensor and prevent the light from switching on.
- Set the pole in concrete: for a pole, plan a concrete base suited to its height and let it dry before fixing the light.
- Fix it securely: tighten the mounting and check the angle of the head to direct the light towards the useful area, not towards the sky or the neighbours.
- First charge: if the instructions recommend it, let the light charge in the sun before the first night.
Safety: working at height carries a real risk of falling. Work in pairs, use scaffolding or an aerial platform rather than a simple ladder for poles over 4 m, and call on a qualified professional if you are not equipped.
Brico MIM tip: before drilling or setting anything in concrete, observe the chosen spot at different times of day. A shadow that crosses the panel only in the afternoon is enough to reduce charging. Send us a photo of the location on WhatsApp and we will help you choose the wattage and the location.
Maintenance and mistakes to avoid
In Morocco, dust and sand quickly settle on panels, especially in rural areas or near roads. A dirty panel recharges less effectively.
- Clean the panel every one to two months with a soft cloth and water, without abrasive products.
- Check that the fixings are tight after periods of strong wind.
- Do not place the light under a tree that will grow.
- Do not expect a 100W model to light a large parking area: choose the wattage according to the surface.

Frequently asked questions about solar lights
Do you need an electrician to install a solar light?
No, not for wiring, as there is none: the light runs on solar energy, with no connection to the grid. For a tall pole, call on a professional equipped for working at height.
Does a solar light stay on all night?
The run time depends on the sun received during the day, how clean the panel is and the model. A location in full sun, with no shade, gives the best results.
Does it work in winter or in cloudy weather?
Yes, but charging is weaker when the sky stays overcast for several days in a row. Good orientation towards the south limits this problem.
Do you deliver everywhere in Morocco?
Yes, Brico MIM delivers to every city in Morocco, with cash on delivery.
