Good outdoor lighting shows off your villa or riad, makes paths safe in the evening and deters intruders. With summer evenings spent outdoors in Morocco, the garden and terrace become a real living space. Here is how to choose your garden lighting.

Types of outdoor light fittings
Bollard lights
Placed along paths and borders, they guide your steps without dazzling. The Italian Fumagalli bollards combine design and sturdiness: Carlo Deco 400, Carlo Deco 800, Ester 500 and Ester 800. The tall versions (800) light a wider area.
Wall lights
Mounted on the facade, near the door or on boundary walls, they light up the entrance and terrace. Available in 9 W, 18 W and 36 W depending on the area to be lit.
Garden globes
Highly decorative, they spread a soft light all around. Examples: 250 mm globe or 300 mm globe with LED lamp, to place on the ground or on a 60 or 120 cm stand.
Garden spike lights
Pushed into the soil, they highlight a tree, a palm or a flower bed: Ferri 5 W LED spike light or 18 W solar LED spike light.
3000K, 4000K or 6500K: which light colour?
| Temperature | Effect | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| 3000K | Warm white, cosy atmosphere | Terrace, garden, highlighting plants |
| 4000K | Neutral, natural white | Paths, entrance, all-purpose use |
| 6500K | Cool white, very bright | Car parks, courtyards, security areas |
Brico MIM tip: keep the same light colour within one area. Mixing warm white and cool white looks unbalanced.
The IP rating: essential outdoors
The IP rating indicates protection against dust (first digit) and water (second digit). Outdoors, choose fittings designed for outdoor use with a suitable rating (IP44 minimum under cover, IP65 or higher in the open air). Connections must also be protected in waterproof junction boxes.
Solar or mains-powered lighting?
- Solar: no cables to run, no electricity consumption. Perfect in Morocco thanks to the sunshine. Brightness depends on how well it charges during the day.
- Mains-powered (220 V): powerful, steady light all night long, controllable by switch, timer or smart module. Requires cabling buried in a conduit, installed properly.
Sample lighting plan for a villa
- Gate and entrance: wall lights on each side.
- Main path: bollards every 3 to 5 metres.
- Trees and palms: spike lights pointing upwards.
- Lawn and relaxation area: garden globes for a soft atmosphere.
- Back of the house: a powerful wall light for security.
