Electrical Panel (Consumer Unit) in Morocco: How to Choose the Right Number of Modules?

Coffret électrique encastré Hager 24 modules - Brico MIM Maroc

The electrical enclosure, also called the electrical panel or consumer unit, is the heart of your home's electrical installation: it houses the circuit breakers and residual current devices (RCDs) that protect your circuits and your family. Whether you are building a house, renovating an apartment or equipping a construction site in Morocco, this Brico MIM guide helps you choose the right electrical panel and the right number of modules.

What is an electrical panel for?

The electrical panel receives the electricity coming from the meter and distributes it to the various circuits in the home: lighting, sockets, kitchen, water heater, air conditioners… Each circuit is protected by a circuit breaker that cuts the power in the event of an overload or short circuit. 30 mA RCDs, for their part, protect people against the risk of electric shock.

How many modules should you choose for your panel?

A module is the standard width unit of a DIN-rail device (17.5 mm). A single circuit breaker generally takes up 1 module, and an RCD 2 modules. To estimate the size of your panel:

  1. Count your circuits: lighting, sockets in each room, kitchen, oven, washing machine, water heater, each air conditioner…
  2. Add the RCDs and the main incoming breaker if needed.
  3. Allow about 20% free modules for future additions (an extra air conditioner, a charging point, a swimming pool…).
Home (indicative) Panel size Our models
Studio, small premises, small circuit 12 modules Hager 12 modules
2 to 3-room apartment 16 to 24 modules 16 modules, Hager 24 modules
Large apartment, house 23 to 47 modules 23 modules, 47 modules + breaker
Villa, building, shop 60 modules and more 60 modules

Brico MIM tip: in Morocco, air conditioners are often added after construction. Each air conditioner ideally needs its own circuit: keep this in mind when choosing your panel, and go for the next size up if in doubt.

Flush-mounted, surface-mounted or IP65 waterproof panel?

Flush-mounted panel

It is built into the wall: the most attractive solution for new builds and full renovations. The door can be opaque (discreet) or transparent (to see the state of the breakers without opening it).

Surface-mounted panel

It is fixed onto the wall, without chasing: handy for a quick renovation, a garage or a technical room.

IP65 waterproof enclosure

For outdoor use, construction sites, farms, well pumps or damp rooms, choose an IP65 waterproof enclosure, protected against dust and water jets. Our Ingelec polyester enclosures: 510 × 407 mm, 653 × 510 mm and 820 × 610 mm.

Meter box and communication enclosure

Complete your installation with our electrical boxes (flush boxes and junction boxes).

Safety rules to follow

  • Have your panel installed or checked by a qualified electrician, in compliance with the Moroccan standard for low-voltage electrical installations (NM 06.1.100).
  • Protect circuits with 30 mA RCDs, especially for the bathroom, kitchen and sockets.
  • Match the rating of each circuit breaker to the cable cross-section of the circuit.
  • Connect the installation to an effective earth connection.
  • Label each circuit breaker so you know which circuit to switch off when needed.
  • Always switch off the power at the main breaker before any work.

Frequently asked questions about electrical panels

What is the difference between an electrical enclosure and an electrical panel?

The enclosure is the box itself (with its rails and door); the electrical panel refers to the enclosure once fitted with its circuit breakers and RCDs. In everyday language, both terms are used for the same thing.

How many modules for a house?

For a family home, generally count between 23 and 47 modules depending on the number of circuits, keeping about 20% free space.

Do you need a waterproof enclosure outdoors?

Yes. Outdoors or in a damp room, use an enclosure with a suitable protection rating, such as IP65.

Do you deliver everywhere in Morocco?

Yes, Brico MIM delivers to every city in Morocco, with cash on delivery.
