9000 BTU air conditioner: the right choice for a bedroom or small office?

Climatiseur mural Carrier 9000 BTU pour chambre ou petit bureau

The 9000 BTU air conditioner is the smallest split AC capacity, and it is often the right fit for a bedroom, a child's room or a small office. Yet many families in Morocco automatically buy a 12000 BTU unit, or even bigger, for a 12 m² room. In this guide, Brico MIM helps you work out whether a 9000 BTU air conditioner in Morocco is enough for your bedroom AC, which models to choose and what the price of a 9000 BTU air conditioner is, whether you live in Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Fez, Oujda, Nador or Driouch.

9000 BTU air conditioner: for what room size?

BTU measures an air conditioner's cooling capacity. 9,000 BTU is roughly 2.6 kW of cooling power. As a common rule of thumb, a 9000 BTU air conditioner suits a room of up to about 18 to 20 m², with a standard ceiling height (around 2.7 m) and reasonable insulation. It is the typical size for a bedroom, a child's room or a home office.

This figure is only a starting point. The same 16 m² bedroom will not have the same needs on the ground floor in the shade as on the top floor under a roof slab heated all afternoon. Here is how to adjust (general guidance, to be confirmed for your home):

Room situationCapacity to consider
Bedroom or office of 9 to 15 m², middle floor9,000 BTU is plenty
Bedroom of 15 to 20 m², well insulated, little sun exposure9,000 BTU is usually suitable
Bedroom of 15 to 20 m² on the top floor, heavily glazed or facing south/west9,000 BTU is borderline: consider 12,000 BTU
Office with several computers or several peopleAllow a margin: often 12,000 BTU from 15 m²
Master bedroom of 20 to 30 m²12,000 BTU rather than 9,000
Room open onto a corridor or living roomCount the whole open area

The city matters too: a summer in Marrakech, Fez, Meknes, Beni Mellal or Errachidia puts far more strain on an air conditioner than a summer in Tangier, Rabat or Agadir. For the full capacity chart, from 9,000 to 60,000 BTU, see our guide Which capacity (BTU) and which type of air conditioner to choose.

Bedroom AC: why 9000 BTU is often ideal

In a bedroom, what you want most is night-time comfort: a stable temperature, little noise and no cold draught on the bed. A correctly sized unit meets these needs better than an oversized one:

  • Fewer on/off cycles: an oversized air conditioner cools very quickly, then stops, and the room warms up again straight away. This back-and-forth is less comfortable.
  • Better dehumidification: a unit running continuously at low speed removes more moisture from the air, which matters in coastal cities such as Casablanca, Tangier or Nador.
  • Quieter operation: with Inverter technology, the compressor slows down once the temperature is reached, giving a steadier sound that is better for sleeping.
  • Lower budget: a 9000 BTU unit costs less to buy than a 12000 BTU unit from the same range.

For a bedroom, a wall-mounted Inverter split remains the best everyday solution. A portable air conditioner can help out, but its compressor sits inside the room: it is generally noisier and less efficient. Small office, practice room, child's room

The home office or small practice

An office of 10 to 15 m² is a good match for a 9000 BTU unit. Watch out for heat sources, though: computers, screens, a printer, lighting and every person in the room add heat. A practice that receives clients all day or an office shared by three people may justify 12,000 BTU.

The child's room

This is the typical use for a 9000 BTU unit. Set a reasonable temperature (around 25-26 °C in summer), angle the louvres so that air does not blow straight onto the bed, and use night mode when the unit has one.

Brico MIM tip: send us the length, width and height of the room, the floor, the direction the windows face and your city on WhatsApp. We will tell you whether 9000 BTU is enough or whether you should go for 12000 BTU, before you order.

The wall-mounted split: the best choice for a bedroom

The Thomson 9000 BTU is our wall-mounted split with a listed price: Inverter technology, reversible operation for heating in winter and filters for indoor air. Carrier 9,000 BTU wall units come in four ranges (Inverter R32, AMBI, Confort Smart Green and Black Miroir); they are new units with prices given on request.

The portable unit: for tenants or occasional use

The Clatronic CL 3716 needs no installation: you set it down, run the hot-air exhaust hose through the window and plug it in. It can be controlled from an app over Wi-Fi. Its product sheet lists a noise level of 65 dB: for a bedroom where you sleep, a split remains quieter.

Price of a 9000 BTU air conditioner in Morocco

At Brico MIM, the price of a 9000 BTU air conditioner starts at 3,300 DH for the Clatronic CL 3716 portable unit and at 3,450 DH for the Thomson Inverter wall-mounted split (current prices on the product pages). Carrier models are sold on quote: their price depends on availability and configuration, and we give you the day's price by WhatsApp or phone.

For a split unit, also include in your budget:

  • installation by a refrigeration technician (mounting, connection, vacuuming, commissioning);
  • extra refrigerant piping if the two units are far apart;
  • a bracket for the outdoor unit (wall bracket or floor stands);
  • a protected electrical circuit from the panel;
  • condensate drainage.

Ask for a quote that itemises these points so you can compare like for like. On energy use, an Inverter model used several hours a day consumes less than an On/Off unit of the same capacity: see Inverter or On/Off air conditioner: what is the difference?

9000 or 12000 BTU: how to decide?

Go for 9,000 BTU if the room is under 15 m², or up to 18-20 m² if it is well insulated, not very exposed and not on the top floor. Step up to 12,000 BTU if the room is over 20 m², under the roof or heavily glazed, if it holds several people or heat-producing equipment, or if you live in a city with very hot summers. If you are torn between the two for a difficult room, a 12,000 BTU Inverter gives you a margin without much penalty on consumption, because it slows down once the temperature is reached. Everything about that capacity is in our guide 12000 BTU air conditioner in Morocco: room size, model and price.

Installing an air conditioner in a bedroom properly

  • Indoor unit: high up, on a clear wall, preferably not right above the headboard or facing the pillow.
  • Outdoor unit: in the shade if possible, well ventilated, firmly fixed and not disturbing the neighbours.
  • Electrics: a dedicated circuit protected by a suitable breaker at the panel.
  • Refrigerant: commissioning and any work on the refrigerant circuit (R32 or other) must be done by an equipped refrigeration technician.
  • Maintenance: clean the filters regularly during the hot season to keep the air healthy and performance high.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 9000 BTU air conditioner enough for 20 m²?

Yes, if the room is well insulated, not very exposed to the sun and not on the top floor. In a hot city, under the roof or with large windows, a 12,000 BTU unit will be more comfortable.

Does a 9000 BTU air conditioner use a lot of electricity?

It is the most economical split capacity. Actual consumption depends on the technology, the set temperature, insulation and how long it runs: an Inverter set around 25-26 °C, with doors and windows closed, stays economical.

Does a 9000 BTU air conditioner heat in winter?

Only if it is reversible. The Thomson 9000 BTU is listed as heating and cooling; for other models, check the product page or ask us.

Why are some 9000 BTU air conditioners "on quote"?

For Carrier models, the price depends on availability and the configuration requested. Click "Request a quote" on the product page or message us on WhatsApp to get the day's price.
