Air Conditioner in Morocco: Which Capacity (BTU) and Which Type, Wall-Mounted, Ducted or Cassette?

Climatiseur mural Carrier Inverter - Brico MIM Maroc

With summers getting hotter and hotter in Morocco, the air conditioner has become an essential appliance, in Marrakech and Fes as much as in Casablanca, Oujda or Nador. But between BTU, Inverter technology and the different types (wall-mounted, ducted, cassette, portable), it is easy to get it wrong. This Brico MIM guide helps you choose the right air conditioner for your room and your budget.

Which BTU capacity should you choose for your room?

BTU (British Thermal Unit) measures the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. A unit that is too weak will run non-stop without cooling the room; a unit that is too powerful will waste energy. Here is a rough guide for a standard room (ceiling height of about 2.7 m):

Room size Recommended capacity Example
Up to 20 m² 9 000 BTU Child's bedroom, small office
20 to 30 m² 12 000 BTU Master bedroom, small living room
30 to 45 m² 18 000 BTU Moroccan salon, living room
45 to 65 m² 24 000 BTU Large living room, open space
Over 65 m² / several rooms 36 000 to 60 000 BTU Villa, shop, offices (ducted or cassette)

Brico MIM tip: go for the next capacity up if the room is on the top floor, has a lot of glazing, faces due south, or if you live in a very hot city (Marrakech, Fes, Meknes, Beni Mellal, Errachidia…).

Wall-mounted, ducted, cassette or portable air conditioner?

Wall-mounted air conditioner (split)

This is the most common choice in Morocco for apartments and houses: an indoor unit fixed to the wall and an outdoor unit. It is efficient, quiet and suited to a single room. Examples: Carrier Confort Smart Green Inverter 9 000 BTU, Carrier Inverter R32 12 000 BTU, Carrier Black Miroir Inverter 18 000 BTU or Carrier Confort Smart Green 24 000 BTU.

Ducted air conditioner

A ducted air conditioner is installed in the false ceiling: air is distributed through ducts and discreet grilles to several rooms. It is the ideal solution for a villa or a large apartment under construction or renovation. Examples: Carrier Classicool X Power Inverter 18 000 BTU, Carrier Inverter R32 48 000 BTU.

Cassette air conditioner

Recessed into the ceiling, a cassette air conditioner blows air in several directions. It is widely used in shops, cafés, offices and waiting rooms. Examples: Carrier cassette 18 000 BTU, Carrier cassette Inverter 60 000 BTU.

Portable air conditioner

With no fixed installation, it can be moved from room to room. Handy for tenants or occasional needs: Carrier R32 12 000 BTU portable air conditioner.

Ducted and cassette air conditioners require an assessment of your home, so they are offered on quotation. Click “Request a quote” on the product page or contact us on WhatsApp.

Inverter or On/Off air conditioner: which one should you choose?

An On/Off air conditioner starts at full power, stops once the temperature is reached, then starts again. An Inverter air conditioner continuously adjusts its compressor speed: the temperature stays more stable, the unit is quieter and it uses significantly less electricity, especially if you run it several hours a day. In Morocco, where air conditioning often runs all summer long, Inverter is generally the best long-term investment. Most Inverter models also provide heating in winter (reversible mode).

R32 refrigerant: why it matters

R32 is a more recent refrigerant than R410A: it has a lower environmental impact and offers good energy efficiency. Most of our Carrier air conditioners use this refrigerant.

5 tips to reduce your electricity bill

  1. Set the temperature between 24 and 26 °C in summer: every degree lower increases consumption.
  2. Keep doors and windows closed while it is running.
  3. Close curtains or shutters during the hottest hours.
  4. Clean the indoor unit filters regularly (about once a month in summer).
  5. Have the outdoor unit installed in the shade, in a well-ventilated spot.
