A building car park, a large villa garden, a warehouse or a farm: to monitor a large area, adding more and more fixed cameras quickly becomes expensive. The solution is the PTZ camera: a motorised camera that rotates, tilts and, on true PTZ models, offers a powerful optical zoom. In this guide, Brico MIM explains how a PTZ camera in Morocco works, how it differs from a simple motorised camera, and which model to choose for your site, with prices.

What is a PTZ camera?
PTZ stands for Pan, Tilt, Zoom: horizontal rotation, vertical tilt and zoom. In practice, you can aim the camera remotely from your phone or recorder, then zoom in on a detail: a number plate, a face, a door at the far end of the property.
Professional PTZ cameras add very useful functions for large areas:
- Saved positions (presets): one click and the camera turns towards the gate, the loading bay or the car park entrance.
- Automatic patrols: the camera moves through several positions on its own to sweep the whole site.
- Smart detection: distinguishing people from vehicles to reduce false alerts.
True PTZ or motorised camera: the difference
People often say “PTZ camera” for any camera that rotates. In reality, there are two families:
The true PTZ camera (optical zoom)
Its lens actually changes focal length: the image comes closer without losing sharpness. This is what you need to read a detail at long range. Example: the Dahua SD49425DB-HNY IP PTZ camera, with 25x optical zoom (5–125 mm), infrared up to 100 m, continuous 360° rotation, 300 presets and patrol tours.
The “pan-tilt” motorised camera (digital zoom)
It rotates and tilts, but its lens is fixed: the zoom is digital, it enlarges the image and loses detail. It is much cheaper and often very practical: battery-powered with a solar panel and 4G for land without electricity, or Wi-Fi indoors.
Our PTZ and motorised cameras compared
| Model | Pan / tilt | Zoom and night | Connection / power | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dahua IP PTZ 4 MP SD49425DB-HNY | 360° continuous / -15° to +90° | 25x optical, IR 100 m | Network cable, PoE+ or 12 V 3 A | From 4,000 DH |
| Imou AOV PT 4G 5 MP | 340° / 90° | 8x digital, IR 25 m | 4G (SIM) + Wi-Fi, 10,000 mAh battery, solar charging | From 1,500 DH |
| Dahua Apollo 4G solar 3 MP | 350° / 90° | Fixed lens, colour at night 20 m | 4G (SIM), 8 W solar panel + 10,000 mAh battery | From 1,350 DH |
| TP-Link Tapo C220 (indoor) | 340° / 69°, auto tracking | 2K, IR 9 m | Wi-Fi | From 480 DH |
Which camera for which area?
Car park, building facade, large warehouse
This is where a true PTZ shines. The Dahua SD49425DB-HNY combines a 4 MP Starlight sensor, 25x optical zoom and infrared up to 100 m: from a single high point, it covers an entire car park and lets you zoom in on a number plate or a person. Its WizSense AI functions (line crossing, intrusion, loitering, person / vehicle classification) help you receive only useful alerts. IP66 rated and operating from -40 °C to +65 °C: it is built for outdoor use.
Large villa garden
For a garden with power and a network cable available, a PTZ mounted high up monitors the whole property and its access points. If the far end of the garden is far from any socket, a solar motorised camera is easier to install.
Farm, agricultural land, construction site, well (no power or Internet)
Here, 4G solar motorised cameras are unbeatable: the Dahua Apollo BP3EW-4G (8 W solar panel, colour night vision up to 20 m) or the Imou AOV PT 4G (5 MP, 4G + Wi-Fi, siren and spotlight). You aim them from the app and receive alerts on your phone. To learn more, read our guide solar 4G camera for farms, land and construction sites.
Inside a shop or small storeroom
The Tapo C220 is an indoor Wi-Fi camera: it covers 360° horizontally and automatically follows movement. An affordable way to monitor a stockroom, a workshop or a shop.
Brico MIM tip: a PTZ camera only looks in one direction at a time. So you don't miss anything, pair it with one or two fixed cameras that permanently record the sensitive points (gate, entrance, till), such as the Dahua 5 MP Smart Dual Light bullet camera from 230 DH. The PTZ is then used to zoom and follow, while the fixed cameras keep continuous evidence.
Limitations to be aware of
- One direction at a time: while the camera zooms to the left, it cannot see what is happening on the right (hence the value of additional fixed cameras).
- Digital zoom ≠ optical zoom: on a motorised camera with a fixed lens, zooming enlarges the image but adds no detail.
- Night range: check the stated infrared or colour range (100 m for the Dahua PTZ, 20 to 25 m for the solar models) against the size of your property.
- Network: 4G models need good mobile coverage on site; Wi-Fi models need a sufficient signal.
Installation, power and recording
IP PTZ camera (wired)
- Power: the Dahua SD49425DB-HNY runs on PoE+ (802.3at, a single network cable for image and power) or 12 V 3 A. Plan for a PoE+ switch or injector, or a dedicated power supply.
- Recording: it is an IP camera. It connects to an NVR or to a Dahua XVR that accepts IP cameras — for example the XVR5108HS-I3 8-channel 5 MP XVR, which accepts up to 12 IP channels (IP cameras up to 6 MP). It can also record on its own to a microSD card of up to 512 GB.
- Remote control: with the Dahua DMSS app, you aim the camera, zoom and view recordings.
- Mounting: the camera weighs 2.4 kg and must be firmly fixed, high up, on a suitable bracket. Cabling and electrical connection should be done by a qualified installer.
For cabling, see our article security camera cabling: 12 V, balun, coaxial or RJ45, and for storage time our guide recording days and XVR hard drive.
Solar 4G motorised camera
No cables: a 4G SIM card, a solar panel facing the sun and a high mounting point are all you need. Recording is done on a microSD card (up to 512 GB) and viewing through the app (DMSS for Dahua, Imou Life for Imou).
Price of a PTZ camera in Morocco
At Brico MIM, prices range from 480 DH for an indoor motorised camera to 4,000 DH for a true IP PTZ camera with 25x optical zoom, with solar 4G motorised cameras at 1,350 to 1,500 DH. For a complete budget, add as needed the recorder, hard drive, power supply (PoE+ or 12 V), cable, microSD or SIM card, and installation. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between optical and digital zoom?
Optical zoom brings the image closer by changing the lens focal length, without losing sharpness. Digital zoom simply enlarges the image, which becomes less detailed.
Can you control a PTZ camera from your phone?
Yes. The Dahua PTZ and the Apollo camera are controlled with the DMSS app, the Imou AOV PT with Imou Life and the Tapo C220 with the Tapo app: rotation, zoom and remote viewing.
Can a motorised camera work without electricity?
Yes, the solar 4G models (Dahua Apollo, Imou AOV PT) run on a battery recharged by a solar panel, with a 4G SIM card for the connection.
Does the Dahua PTZ camera work with my recorder?
It connects to an NVR or a Dahua XVR that accepts IP cameras. Send us your recorder's reference on WhatsApp so we can check.
