Alexa voice assistant: control your home by voice in Morocco (lights, AC, sockets)

Assistant vocal Alexa Echo Dot pour maison connectée au Maroc

“Alexa, turn off the living room light.” “Alexa, turn on the AC.” Controlling your home by voice is no longer reserved for high-end villas: with an Alexa voice assistant and a few compatible modules, you can do it in an apartment in Casablanca as well as in a house in Oujda or Nador. In this guide, we explain how Alexa works in Morocco, the Echo Dot price, which devices let you control lights, air conditioning and electrical circuits, and how to build a voice-controlled smart home step by step.

How does an Alexa voice assistant work?

Alexa is Amazon's voice assistant. It listens to your requests through a smart speaker such as the Echo Dot, processes them via the Internet, then answers or sends the command to compatible devices in your home. So three things are needed:

  • An Alexa speaker (Echo Dot) plugged into a socket and connected to Wi-Fi.
  • The Alexa app on your smartphone (iOS or Android) for setup.
  • Alexa-compatible devices: lighting modules, smart infrared remote, lock… These are what actually act on the lights or the AC.

Important: the speaker alone does not turn your home into a smart home. It acts as a “voice remote” for devices that must themselves be connected. If you are just starting out, our guide smart home in Morocco: where to start helps you lay the foundations.

Echo Dot 4th generation: price in Morocco and features

At Brico MIM, the Amazon Alexa Echo Dot 4th generation assistant is available from 750 DH, with a 12-month warranty. According to its product page, it lets you:

  • control compatible smart devices by voice and operate them remotely from the Alexa app;
  • stream music and ask for the weather, news, timers, reminders and shopping lists;
  • sync several Echo speakers in different rooms and make calls between Echo devices;
  • mute the microphone with a physical button, to protect your privacy.

It connects via dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth. A Wi-Fi connection is essential for voice commands.

Lights, AC, sockets: which devices can you control by voice?

Here are the devices in our Smart Home collection whose product page states compatibility with Amazon Alexa:

What you want to control Device How it works Price
A light Shelly 1 Gen4 1-channel relay hidden behind the existing switch 280 DH
A circuit with consumption monitoring (lighting, dedicated socket, water heater, pump) Shelly 1PM Gen3 16 A relay with real-time power metering 280 DH
Two circuits, or a roller shutter Shelly 2PM Gen3 2-channel 10 A relay, roller shutter mode 395 DH
Air conditioner, TV, fan (infrared remote) MOES Smart IR Remote Universal Wi-Fi infrared remote + temperature and humidity sensor 620 DH
Front door X5 Pro Wi-Fi lock Tuya smart lock, compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant 1 690 DH

Lights: a module behind the switch

Rather than replacing all your bulbs, a Shelly relay fits in the wall box, behind the existing switch. The wall switch keeps working normally, and you add voice and remote control on top. Everything is explained in our article Shelly smart switch and module for lighting.

AC: a smart infrared remote

Does your wall-mounted air conditioner already work with an infrared remote? The MOES Smart IR Remote reproduces its commands from the Tuya Smart / Smart Life app and responds to Alexa. Its product page states that it supports most air conditioners and infrared-remote devices, and lets you create scenes based on temperature or time. No need to change your air conditioner or do any building work.

“Sockets”: controlling a circuit

To switch an appliance on a dedicated socket (water heater, pump, heater) on or off by voice, the solution is to fit a Shelly 1PM Gen3 on that circuit: it switches up to 16 A and shows actual consumption, handy for saving electricity. This is installed in the electrical panel or in a junction box and must be done by an electrician.

Brico MIM tip: Shelly modules are wired to 220 V. Always switch off the circuit breaker and have an electrician make the connection. The Echo Dot and the MOES infrared remote, on the other hand, simply plug into a socket: that is the easiest place to start.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Plug in the Echo Dot and install the Alexa app on your phone. Follow the screens to connect it to your Wi-Fi.
  2. Set up your devices with their own app (Shelly, Tuya Smart / Smart Life) and check that they work from your phone.
  3. Link the accounts: in the Alexa app, enable the manufacturer's skill and sign in with your Shelly or Smart Life account.
  4. Run device discovery: they appear in the Alexa app.
  5. Give them simple names (“living room light”, “bedroom AC”) and group devices by room.

If you get stuck, our team can help you with setup on WhatsApp.

Routines and useful everyday uses

Alexa is not just about “on” and “off”. In the app, routines let you trigger several actions with a single phrase or at a set time:

  • “Good night”: turns off the living room and kitchen lights.
  • Coming home from work in summer: the bedroom AC starts before you arrive, from the app, without leaving the unit running all day.
  • Hands full: turn on the hallway light when you come in with the shopping.
  • Elderly people or people with reduced mobility: control lights and AC without getting up.
  • Roller shutters: with a Shelly 2PM Gen3 in shutter mode, open or close the shutters by voice.

Limitations and good practice

  • Internet required: without Wi-Fi, voice commands don't work. Wall switches wired to Shelly modules, however, keep controlling the lights. If the signal is weak in some rooms, see our guide weak Wi-Fi: router and Wi-Fi bridge.
  • Infrared needs to “see” the device: place the MOES remote in the same room as the AC, with nothing between the two.
  • Locks and voice: for the front door, caution is essential. If you link a lock to Alexa, protect any unlocking with a code and make sure a simple phrase spoken from outside cannot open it.
  • Privacy: use the microphone mute button whenever you like, and manage your recordings in the app.
  • Start small: one room, two or three devices, then expand.
