Random orbital, finishing or belt sander: which one should you choose for your projects?

Restoring an old door, stripping a piece of furniture before repainting it, smoothing a filler coat on a wall or ceiling: sanding is a key step in finishing work. But between the random orbital sander, the finishing (vibrating) sander, the belt sander, the delta sander and the drywall sander, the choice is not obvious. This guide helps you choose the right sander in Morocco for your projects, pick the right abrasives and compare the sander prices available at Brico MIM.

Types of sanders and what they are used for

All sanders do the same thing — rub an abrasive over a surface — but not with the same motion. It is this motion that determines working speed and finish quality.

  • Random orbital (eccentric, roto-orbital): a round pad that spins and oscillates at the same time. Fast, with no visible scratches.
  • Finishing sander (orbital with rectangular pad): small, fast vibrations. Ideal for finishing and right angles.
  • Belt: an abrasive belt runs continuously, like a conveyor belt. Very aggressive, for rough sanding large surfaces.
  • Delta: a triangular pad for corners, nooks and small parts.
  • Drywall sander (giraffe): a large round pad at the end of a long handle for walls and ceilings.

Random orbital sander: the most versatile

If you can only have one sander, it is often the random orbital sander. Its dual motion (rotation + oscillation) removes material quickly while leaving an even surface, without the small swirl marks a conventional sander sometimes leaves. It is suitable for stripping furniture, sanding a table top, a door or a shutter, and preparing surfaces before paint or varnish. Its weak point: the round pad cannot reach into corners.

Our random orbital and round-pad sanders

Not to be confused with: the rotary sander 320 W 125 mm pad TOTAL TF2131256 (from 560 DH), with variable speed, which simply spins on its axis: effective for smoothing and surface preparation.

Finishing sander: for a smooth finish

The finishing sander works more gently than a random orbital. Its rectangular pad reaches right to the edge and into right angles, making it the ideal tool for finishing furniture, a frame, a shelf or between two coats of paint or varnish. It is light and easy to handle, even for a beginner. On the other hand, it removes little material: for stripping thick paint, it will be slow.

Our finishing and corner sanders

Brico MIM tip: to restore a piece of furniture, the winning combination is a random orbital sander for large flat surfaces, then a finishing or delta sander for corners and mouldings. If you already have TOTAL 20 V batteries, choosing sanders from the same cordless range will save you money.

Belt sander: for removing a lot of material

The belt sander is the most aggressive: its abrasive belt runs continuously in one direction and removes a lot of material in a short time. It is used to rough-sand raw wood, strip an old floor or a large door, flatten boards or correct an uneven surface. It takes a little practice: if you hold it still, it quickly gouges the surface. Always work it along the wood grain, and follow up with finish sanding using a random orbital or finishing sander.

Brico MIM does not offer a belt sander at the moment. To quickly remove material from a piece of wood, an electric planer 750 W TOTAL TL7508226 (from 700 DH) is often a good alternative, followed by a random orbital sander with a medium grit. For a specific need, message us on WhatsApp.

Sanding a wall or ceiling: the drywall sander

To sand a wall after applying filler or patching, or before repainting, a hand-held sander quickly tires your arms and leaves an uneven finish. The drywall sander, known as a “giraffe”, has a large round pad at the end of a handle: you cover large areas standing up, right up to the ceiling, without scaffolding for standard heights. The LED light helps you spot defects while sanding.

For bodywork or polishing, the cordless sander polisher 20 V TOTAL TAPLI20151 (from 1700 DH) is better suited. And if you work with a compressor, the pneumatic sander 150 mm TOTAL TAT91501 is available from 600 DH.

Abrasives, grits and good practice

Which grit should you choose?

The grit number indicates how fine it is: the lower the number, the coarser and more aggressive the abrasive.

  • Coarse grit (40 to 80): stripping, removing old paint or varnish, raw wood.
  • Medium grit (100 to 150): smoothing and preparation before painting.
  • Fine grit (180 to 240 and above): finishing, sanding between coats.

The rule: move from one grit to the next without skipping too many steps, and change the abrasive as soon as it gets clogged. A hook-and-loop pad, as on several of our models, makes this change very quick.

Safety and dust

  • Wear a suitable dust mask and safety glasses: fine dust from wood, filler or paint is irritating.
  • Old paint may contain lead: if in doubt, avoid dry sanding it without suitable protection.
  • Ventilate the room and protect furniture and the floor with a dust sheet.
  • Let the tool do the work: pressing hard does not speed up sanding and wears out the motor and the abrasive.

Frequently asked questions

Which sander should a beginner choose?

For most DIY projects, a 125 mm random orbital or round-pad sander is the best place to start. Add a finishing or delta sander if you often work in corners.

Can you sand a wall with a random orbital sander?

Yes, for a small area. For an entire wall or ceiling, a long-handled drywall sander is much faster and less tiring.

Corded or cordless sander?

Corded is ideal for long, uninterrupted sessions. Cordless 20 V offers more freedom of movement; check whether the battery and charger are included with the model you choose.

Do you deliver everywhere in Morocco?

Yes, Brico MIM delivers to all cities in Morocco, with cash on delivery.
