Cordless drill driver: how to choose the right one (voltage, torque, battery)

Looking for a drill driver in Morocco to assemble furniture, put up shelves or work on a building site? Between 4 V, 12 V and 18V/20V drill driver models, torque figures and batteries of different capacities, it is easy to get it wrong. In this guide, Brico MIM explains how to choose a cordless drill driver for your needs, and what cordless drill price to expect.

Screwdriver, drill driver or hammer drill?

Before comparing figures, you need to know which type of tool suits you:

  • The cordless screwdriver (electric screwdriver): small and light, designed for driving and removing screws. Ideal for assembling furniture, fitting sockets and small maintenance jobs. It does not replace a drill.
  • The cordless drill driver: the all-round tool par excellence. It drives and removes screws and drills wood, metal and soft materials, thanks to a torque setting (the notched collar) and often two speeds.
  • The hammer drill driver: it adds a hammer mode that makes drilling into brick and light masonry easier.

To drill concrete regularly (slab, pillar, load-bearing wall), no drill driver can replace a real rotary hammer: its pneumatic hammering action is far more effective than the mechanical hammer action of a drill.

Voltage: 4 V, 12 V or 18V/20V drill driver?

The voltage (in volts) indicates the tool's power category. The higher it is, the more force the tool can deliver, but the heavier it is.

4 V to 8 V: the electric screwdriver

Perfect for small repetitive screwing jobs: flat-pack furniture, hardware, electrical work. Examples: the TOTAL TSDLI0402 4 V lithium-ion cordless screwdriver supplied with 10 bits, or the TOTAL TSDLI08025 8 V screwdriver with adjustable handle.

12 V: compact and versatile for the home

The right compromise for home use: light, easy to handle in tight spaces (cupboards, kitchen), and enough to drill wood and thin metal and drive most common fixings.

18 V / 20 V: power for heavy-duty work

Brands label tools of the same category as "18 V" or "20 V": 20 V generally refers to the maximum no-load voltage, 18 V to the nominal voltage under load. These models are suited to long screws, large-diameter drilling, carpentry, fitting out an entire home and site use.

Voltage Recommended use Strengths Limits
4 V – 8 V Furniture assembly, small screws Very light, low price Not for serious drilling
12 V Home DIY, wood, thin metal Compact, easy to handle Borderline for long screws
18 V / 20 V Heavy work, building sites, joinery High torque, versatile Heavier, more expensive

Torque (Nm): the real measure of power

Torque, expressed in newton-metres (Nm), measures rotational force. It is what lets you drive a long screw into hardwood or drill a large hole without the tool stalling. As general benchmarks:

  • Less than 10 Nm: light screwing (electric screwdriver).
  • 20 to 30 Nm: everyday DIY at home, medium-sized wall plugs and screws.
  • 45 Nm and above: large screws, large-diameter drilling, intensive use.

In our range, the TOTAL TDLI1211 12 V 20 Nm drill driver and the TOTAL TDLI1222 12 V 25 Nm with 2 batteries cover the home, while the TOTAL TDLI20011 20 V 45 Nm drill driver or the TOTAL TIDLI206681 brushless 20 V 66 Nm are aimed at more demanding work.

Maximum torque is not needed all the time: the torque adjustment collar lets the clutch slip at the right moment so you don't strip the screw head or damage a furniture panel.

Brico MIM tip: for screwing, always start with a low torque setting, then increase one notch at a time. For drilling, set the collar to the "drill" symbol and choose the low speed for large diameters and metal, the high speed for small bits and wood.

Battery: Ah, number of batteries and charging

All recent drill drivers use lithium-ion batteries: light, with no memory effect, and they hold their charge in storage. Three points to check:

Also think about compatibility: if you plan to buy other cordless tools of the same brand and voltage, check that they share the same battery. You will save money when buying your next tools.

Brushless, chuck, speeds: the other criteria

Brushless motor

A brushless motor runs cooler, wears less and makes better use of the battery's energy, which means longer runtime for the same battery. It is the option to favour for frequent use: for example the TOTAL TDLI20602 20 V brushless cordless drill with 2 batteries and 47 accessories.

10 mm or 13 mm chuck

The keyless chuck takes drill bits and screwdriver bits. A 10 mm chuck is enough for the home; a 13 mm chuck takes larger bits and is generally fitted to powerful models, such as the TOTAL TDLI205582 brushless 20 V 55 Nm hammer drill driver, 13 mm chuck.

Hammer mode, LED light, weight

Hammer mode is useful if you often fix into brick. A built-in LED helps inside cupboards. Finally, hold the tool in your hand: for prolonged overhead use, weight and balance matter as much as power.

What about a corded drill?

If you always work near a socket and want the lowest price, a corded drill is still worth considering, such as the TOTAL TD55108 550 W electric drill driver. Cordless wins as soon as you move around: terrace, roof, garden or a site without electricity.

Frequently asked questions

Which drill driver should I choose for home use?

A 12 V drill driver with 20 to 25 Nm of torque is enough for most household jobs: furniture, shelves, curtain rods. If you are planning heavier work, go straight to 18V/20V.

Can a drill driver drill concrete?

A hammer drill can make a few holes in brick or soft concrete, but for reinforced concrete or repeated drilling, an SDS rotary hammer is far more effective and spares your tool.

How long does the battery last?

It depends on its capacity (Ah), the motor and the work being done. To never be stuck, choose a kit with two batteries and recharge them after use, without leaving them in the sun.
