Modern living rooms, open kitchens, shops, offices: magnetic track lighting has become a fixture of contemporary interiors. The principle is simple: a track fixed to the ceiling or wall, onto which you clip linear lamps, spotlights or corner lamps using a magnet. You can then move, add or remove them without tools.
In this complete guide, we detail the components of an installation (track, lamps, transformer, accessories), how to size your system correctly and the installation rules.

How does magnetic track lighting work?
The aluminium track contains two conductors supplied with low voltage by a transformer. Each lamp has magnets and contacts: simply place it on the track and it holds in place and lights up. The result: flexible, discreet and very stylish lighting that you can adapt as the room layout changes.
- Freedom: move a spotlight above a painting, add a linear lamp above the kitchen island.
- Aesthetics: a thin, continuous black line on the ceiling, without a multitude of recessed light points.
- Scalability: start with a few lamps and add more later.
The components of an installation
| Component | Role | Brico MIM example |
|---|---|---|
| Track | Supports and powers the lamps | Black aluminium track 3 m module 20 |
| Transformer | Converts 220 V to low voltage for the track | Transformer 200W MNG-TF-48V |
| Linear lamp | Even general lighting | Linear lamp 24W 3 colours |
| Spotlight | Targeted lighting, highlighting | Magnetic spotlight 6W 3 colours |
| Accessories | Corners, connectors, joints | L corner 90° module 20 |
The track
Our black aluminium magnetic tracks are 3 m long, available in module 20 or reference 1013 BK. A 90° L corner connects two module 20 tracks to follow the outline of a room, and a quick connector makes joining easier. All components of the same system must be compatible with each other: before ordering, check your track's module or ask us on WhatsApp.
The lamps
- Linear lamps 12W, 18W or 24W: for general lighting of a room, a hallway or a worktop.
- Spotlights 6W 3 colours, including a fixed version that shines downwards: to light a painting, a table or a shelf.
- Guideway lamp 10W with small aligned optics: for precise accent lighting, for example on a display case. See the Guideway 10W lamp.
- Corner lamp 20W EUROPHI: to keep a continuous line of light around a corner.
- Bluetooth speaker 10W: it clips onto the track like a lamp to play your music. Discover the magnetic track speaker.
System components are available from 40 DH (quick connector), lamps from 150 DH and 3 m tracks from 370 DH. Up-to-date prices are shown on each product page.
Choosing the right transformer
This is the most important step. The transformer must supply at least the total wattage of all the lamps on the track. Our transformer is rated at 200 W. Add up the wattage of your lamps and, as a guideline, keep a margin of about 20%, i.e. a maximum of 160 W of lamps for a 200 W transformer.
Example for a living room (guideline):
- 2 linear lamps 24W = 48 W
- 4 spotlights 6W = 24 W
- 1 corner lamp 20W = 20 W
- Total: 92 W, so a 200 W transformer is more than enough and leaves room to add lamps later.
Brico MIM tip: draw your ceiling on a sheet of paper with the position of the track, the corners and each lamp, then add up the watts. Send us this sketch on WhatsApp: we will check the complete list with you (tracks, corners, connectors, transformer) before you order.
Which lamps for which room?
- Living room: linear lamps for general lighting, spotlights for the sofa, the bookcase or a painting.
- Kitchen: linear lamps above the worktop and the island, for even, shadow-free light.
- Hallway: a continuous track with a few 12W linear lamps.
- Shop or showroom: spotlights and Guideway lamps to highlight products, linear lamps for the general ambiance.
3-colour lamps let you choose warmer or cooler light depending on the desired ambiance.
Installing a magnetic track
- Plan the track layout and the location of the transformer, which must remain accessible and ventilated (often in a false ceiling).
- Switch off the power at the circuit breaker and check there is no voltage.
- Fix the track to the ceiling according to the mounting method specified for the model, keeping it perfectly aligned.
- Join the tracks with the appropriate corners and connectors.
- Connect the transformer to the 220 V mains and to the track.
- Clip on the lamps, switch the power back on and test.
Safety: the 220 V side of the transformer must be connected by a qualified electrician, on a circuit protected by a 30 mA residual current circuit breaker. Never exceed the transformer's rated power and work from a stable stepladder.
Frequently asked questions about magnetic tracks
Can the lamps be moved without switching off the power?
The system is designed to place and move lamps easily. As a precaution, switch off the lighting before handling the lamps and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
How many lamps on a 200 W transformer?
Add up the watts: for example, about six 24 W linear lamps stay under 160 W, keeping a safety margin.
Is a magnetic track suitable for a plaster ceiling?
Yes, it is one of the most common uses. Plan the cable routing and the transformer location during the plastering work.
