Do you need to light a housing estate street, a large courtyard, the entrance to a warehouse or a shop's parking area? When mains power is available, an electric LED street light remains the most reliable solution: it lights up all night, whatever the weather. The real question is which wattage to choose: a 100W, 150W or 200W light?
This guide helps you compare wattages, read a technical data sheet (lumens, IP67, beam angle) and prepare a safe installation.

How to read an LED light's data sheet
The wattage indicates how much power the light consumes. What matters for lighting is the luminous flux in lumens (lm), i.e. the amount of light produced. Here are the specifications to look at:
- Luminous flux (lm): the higher it is, the larger the area lit. On LAZIO lights, the advertised efficiency is 100 lm/W: 100W gives 10 000 lm, 150W gives 15 000 lm and 200W gives 20 000 lm.
- IP protection rating: for outdoor use, aim for a high rating. IP67 means the light is protected against dust and against temporary immersion in water: ideal against rain, sand and washing.
- Beam angle: a wide angle (120° on LAZIO lights) spreads the light over a large area.
- Colour temperature: a cool white (7000K on LAZIO lights) makes spaces highly visible, which is useful for security.
- Supply voltage: a wide range (85–265 V AC on LAZIO lights) copes better with grid fluctuations.
100W, 150W or 200W LED light: which one to choose?
The choice depends mainly on the area to be lit and the height of the pole. Here are some indicative guidelines:
| Wattage | Typical use (indicative) | Pole height (indicative) |
|---|---|---|
| 100W | House courtyard, farm entrance, path, façade, small parking area | 5 to 7 m |
| 150W | Neighbourhood street, shop parking area, large courtyard, warehouse | 6 to 8 m |
| 200W | Large parking area, wide road, factory or warehouse yard | 8 to 10 m |
For a street, several evenly spaced lights are preferable to a single very powerful one. For a courtyard, one or two lights mounted on the façade are often enough. For a parking area, spread the light points to avoid shadowy areas between vehicles.
How many lights do you need?
A simple method, as a rough guide: lit area (m²) ≈ lumens × 0.5 ÷ target illuminance level (lux). The 0.5 coefficient accounts for light lost outside the useful area.
- Residential path or courtyard: about 10 to 20 lux.
- Parking area or busy street: about 20 to 30 lux.
Example: a 15 000 lm light aiming for 20 lux covers about 15 000 × 0.5 ÷ 20 ≈ 375 m², i.e. a courtyard of about 19 × 19 m. For the spacing between poles, allow about 3 to 4 times the mounting height. These figures are orders of magnitude: for a street or housing estate project, have the layout validated by a professional.
Brico MIM tip: for a courtyard or an entrance, the model with a day/night sensor means you never forget to switch the light off in the morning and removes the need for a switch or timer. Send us the dimensions of your space on WhatsApp and we will suggest the right number and wattage of lights.

Installation and electrical safety
A street light connects to the 220 V mains: the connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician. Points to observe:
- Switch off the power at the circuit breaker and check that there is no voltage before any work.
- Protect the outdoor circuit with a 30 mA residual current device (RCD) and a circuit breaker suited to the total load.
- Use cable designed for outdoor use, run in conduit if buried, and waterproof junction boxes.
- Connect the earth if the light provides for it.
- Fix the light on a sturdy bracket or pole, then adjust the angle of the head towards the area to be lit.
Working at height: above 4 m, use an aerial platform or scaffolding, never a ladder alone, and never work alone.
Frequently asked questions about LED street lighting
What is the difference between IP65 and IP67?
Both provide full protection against dust. IP65 withstands water jets, while IP67 goes further and withstands temporary immersion. For a light exposed to rain and sand, IP67 offers a valuable safety margin.
Electric or solar light?
If mains power is available nearby, electric guarantees constant lighting all night. If the location is far from the meter, a solar light saves you from running a cable.
Can I mount the light on a wall?
Yes, with a suitable wall bracket. This is the usual solution for lighting a courtyard or a façade.
