Choosing a water heater in Morocco is not always easy: electric water heater, gas water heater (butane) or solar water heater? Which capacity: 30, 50, 80 or 100 litres? In this guide, Brico MIM compares the three options and helps you find the right model for your family, your home and your budget.

Comparison: electric, gas or solar water heater?
| Criterion | Electric | Gas | Solar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Medium | Lowest | High |
| Running cost | Electricity bill | Gas bottles | Very low (sunshine) |
| Hot water | Stored (limited by tank volume) | Instant, unlimited | Stored, large volume |
| Installation | Simple, anywhere | Ventilated room required | Sunny roof or terrace |
| Ideal for | Apartments, bathrooms | Kitchens, small budgets | Villas, houses with a terrace |
Electric water heater: which capacity should you choose?
An electric water heater (or storage tank heater) heats and stores water in a tank. It is easy to install, with no flue, which makes it the preferred choice for apartment bathrooms. The right capacity depends on the number of people:
| Capacity | Recommended use (indicative) | Our models |
|---|---|---|
| 10 to 15 L | Kitchen sink, washbasin | Chaffoteaux 10 L, Ariston 15 L |
| 30 L | 1 person, studio | Ariston 30 L, Marina 30 L |
| 50 L | 1 to 2 people | Ariston Velis EVO 50 L, Bosch 50 L |
| 80 L | 2 to 3 people | Ariston 80 L |
| 100 L and above | Family of 4 or more | Ariston 100 L |
Brico MIM tip: if the whole family showers one after another in the evening, go for the larger capacity. A water heater that is too small means a cold shower for the last person!
Gas water heater: economical, but with safety rules
Very common in Morocco, the gas water heater runs on a butane bottle and produces hot water instantly, with no volume limit. The 6 L/min model suits one water point (a shower or a sink). Models with automatic or electronic ignition light up as soon as you open the tap.
Essential safety rules:
- Never install a gas water heater in a closed bathroom or an unventilated room: combustion produces carbon monoxide, an invisible and dangerous gas.
- Install it in a well-ventilated room, ideally with the fumes vented outside.
- Regularly check the bottle hose and regulator, and replace them by the date indicated.
- Have the appliance serviced regularly by a professional.
Our models: StarLux 6 L automatic, Leon 6 L, Pacific M2 6 L, Vega 6 L and Bosch 6 L/min electronic.
Solar water heater: a profitable investment under the Moroccan sun
With strong sunshine almost all year round, Morocco is an ideal country for a solar water heater. The purchase price is higher, but the water is heated for free by the sun, which greatly reduces electricity or gas spending over time. It is particularly suited to villas and houses with a well-exposed roof or terrace, and to large families. Example: Zelios Chaffoteaux 300 L solar water heater.

Frequently asked questions about water heaters
Which water heater uses the least energy?
A solar water heater has the lowest running cost. For an electric water heater, choose the right capacity and set the thermostat to around 55 °C to limit consumption.
Which water heater for a family of 4?
A 100-litre electric water heater, or a solar water heater to save money in the long run.
Can you put a gas water heater in the bathroom?
No, unless the room is perfectly ventilated with fumes vented outside. For a bathroom, an electric water heater is the safest solution.
