Rugs, tiles, pet hair, sand brought in from the terrace, building dust… Every home has its own needs. And when choosing between a canister vacuum, a cordless stick vacuum, a robot vacuum or a drum vacuum, it is easy to get it wrong. The best vacuum cleaner is not the most expensive one: it is the one that matches your floor area, your floors and the way you clean.
Here is a simple guide to understanding each type of vacuum cleaner, its strengths and limits, and choosing the right one for your home.

Canister, cordless stick or robot vacuum: the 4 main types
The canister vacuum
This is the “classic” vacuum cleaner: a motor unit on wheels, a hose and a tube with a brush. Plugged into the mains, it offers constant suction and unlimited run time, since it does not depend on a battery. It is well suited to large areas and rugs. On the other hand, it is bulkier to store and to drag from room to room, especially on stairs.
The cordless stick vacuum
Light and quick to grab, it runs on a battery. Ideal for small daily cleaning: crumbs under the table, the entrance, the car, the stairs. Its limits: limited battery life (varies by model and power mode), a small container that needs emptying often, and a battery that wears out over the years.
The robot vacuum
It cleans on its own while you are out and keeps floors clean day to day. It is an excellent complement, especially with pets. But it does not fully replace a classic vacuum cleaner: it struggles in corners, cannot do stairs or sofas, and you need to clear the floor (cables, toys) before it runs.
The drum vacuum
Robust, with a large drum instead of a bag, it is designed for heavy-duty jobs: garage, workshop, basement, building site, shop, but also the big clean of a villa or a terrace. It is the choice of DIY enthusiasts and professionals.
The comparison in one table
| Type | Strengths | Limits | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canister | Constant suction, no battery | Bulky, cable | Big clean, rugs |
| Cordless stick | Light, quick, no cable | Battery life, small container | Apartment, daily cleaning |
| Robot | Automatic, regular upkeep | Corners, stairs, floor must be cleared | Complement, pets, busy people |
| Drum | Robust, large capacity | Noisier and bulkier | Garage, workshop, building site, villa |
The criteria that really matter
- Power: watts indicate what the motor consumes, not directly the suction strength. A good brush and a well-sealed airflow path matter just as much.
- Filtration: if anyone in the family has allergies or asthma, choose an appliance with a quality filter, well maintained.
- Bag, container or drum: a bag is cleaner to empty, a container or drum saves buying consumables.
- Accessories: crevice tool for corners, furniture brush, parquet brush… they make the difference.
- Noise: important in an apartment or with a baby.
- Cable length or battery life: depending on the size of your home.
Brico MIM tip: in Morocco, sand and fine dust are everywhere. Empty the drum or container before it is full and clean the filter regularly: a clogged filter cuts suction and strains the motor. For building dust (plaster, cement), do not use your household vacuum: a drum vacuum is made for that.
Which vacuum for your home?
- Studio or small apartment: a cordless stick vacuum is often enough for daily use.
- Family apartment: a cordless stick for quick passes, complemented by a canister or a robot.
- Large house or villa with rugs: a powerful canister vacuum, possibly a robot for upkeep between cleans.
- House with a garage, workshop or ongoing works: a drum vacuum is essential.
- Villa with a pool: the pool has its own equipment, such as a pool robot (see below).

Frequently asked questions about choosing a vacuum cleaner
Can a robot vacuum replace a classic vacuum cleaner?
Rarely 100%. It maintains floors very well day to day, but you should keep a classic vacuum or a stick for corners, stairs, sofas and the big clean.
Are more watts always better?
Not necessarily. Power in watts indicates the motor's consumption. Real efficiency also depends on the brush, the sealing and filter maintenance.
Can you vacuum plaster dust with a household vacuum cleaner?
It is not recommended: very fine dust clogs the filter and can damage the motor. Use a drum vacuum suited to building work.
Do you deliver everywhere in Morocco?
Yes, Brico MIM delivers to every city in Morocco, with cash on delivery.
